Just a bit of wedding etiquette...

I thought I would poll to check on a quick wedding etiquette question that I was wondering about.

I have a friend who is getting married in three weeks. In college (recently) we were very good friends and hall mates. She now lives locally, but I don't get to see her as often as would be nice due to busy schedules and life's movements. That being said, I thought it would be nice to receive a wedding invite (I also know the groom slightly, and the groom's family well), but I didn't expect one.

Then I got the invite to her bridal shower several weeks ago and it was a pleasant half-surprise. I got her a nice gift, and had a great time catching up with her. Since then, I kind of expected a wedding invite....I know where she is having the wedding and also know that she is not space or guest restricted.

Long story short, wedding is in three weeks, and no invite. I realize there is still possibly a little time, but I was a little disappointed. If you are invited to a bridal shower locally, is it etiquette to also send the local wedding invite? It occurred to me that my etiquette expectations may be wrong on this.

Re: Just a bit of wedding etiquette...

  • Locally or no, if you're invited to shower the bride with gifts, then you'd damn well better be invited to the wedding.  Work showers are the only exception.

  • If you are invited to the shower you are also invited to the wedding (work showers are the exception). The bride seems like a gem. That is incredibly rude.

  • Yikes.

I wonder if the invite got lost in the mail, do they have a wedding website? If so you may find your name in the guest list and can also RSVP on that. I'm pretty sure you are invited to the wedding, something just went wrong.

  • Thanks so much for the replies, ladies! The bride-to-be is a really sweet girl....I wasn't angry, just a little disappointed. And hey....the invite might come really late still.

The suggestion about the wedding website is good. I'll have to

  • Yes maybe it got lost in the mail. We had a guest who never received our invite, but got our save the date. When she never RSVPed, I contacted her and we figured out together that the invite never came.
  • Checking the website is a great idea. It probably got lost in the mail and she didn't buy or was too lazy to add a return address. Mail always needs an return address.
  • An acquaintance of mine got married a few years back, and one of her friends threw her a shower. I was also friends with that girl and we had some mutual friends.  The girl throwing the shower invited me, I think mistakenly assuming I had been invite
