Who to listen to, boss or corporate?

I am having a hard time figuring out, after eight months at this job, just what exactly my jobs is. I work in sales and my company has branches that they work out of. All of the branches are relatively close and we all get along, and we all get along with corporate very well. Recently there have been a lot of changes and some of those have opened up opportunities for me. I have th chance to open my sales territory to the whole state, and may be chosen to be trained in a special area that I can work in while doing my sales. The regional manager (corporate) tells me I should be doing these things and he will see to it I get anything I need to complete these tasks. However when I informed my immediate boss (branch level) that I will be doing these things he said no. He told me I am a branch level employee and not corporate, therefore I will only do work for the branch, not expand my territory and not receive the special training. I'm in a crazy place now where I do not know who I am supposed to listen to. I see my boss's point, but now I feel deflated and discouraged especially since that special training is directly related to my background and degree and would make me so happy.

This came to this point this week, when we had a huge meeting planned with customers. It was in the area of my branch but was planned by corporate. I offered to help but was told they had it under control. The meeting went very poorly, and my boss put the blame on me. However, the regional manager blamed his corporate people and told me to take over next time. So now I am completely lost as to who I should listen to. Do I ask, once again, for someone to tell me what my job is? Should I try to meet with them both to straighten it out? I do not know who to listen to anymore and am afraid something will happen again, I will get the blame and get fired because I listened to the wrong person. Help!

Re: Who to listen to, boss or corporate?

  • Is the corporate person "above" your direct supervisor? In other words, does this corporate person supervise your boss?

If so, can you ask the corporate person to communicate with your boss about the changes and how they will affect you?

    If

  • Yes he is basically my boss' boss. My boss claims that the corporate guy doesn't understand our territory and so I shouldn't listen to him. I'm fine with whatever they decide, but I need to be on the same page as everyone. I like the options the corporate
  • If possible I'd try the meet with them both.  Might not be possible (especially if they have a poor relationship, which is sounds kind of like) but worth exploring.  Maybe you could say something like "Now that I know our branch and the organ

    Anniversary
  • IMO you should speak to the corporate person clearly that he needs to explain your boss why you should be working with him(corporate person) directly. This should solve the problem.
