I have been a high school teacher for over 10 years, and in my school I am often called upon to mentor newer teachers, both formally and informally, but I have never been in the position I find myself in today.
We have a teacher in the department this year who has been struggling -- really struggling. He received formal mentoring from a colleague last year, but he has had difficulty making changes and putting advice into practice. When he was made aware that he was in danger of not receiving a contract this year, he sought informal mentoring from me, but he's continued to have trouble.
My chair and the principal told him today that his contract wouldn't be renewed. I was teaching while this happened, and I haven't seen him yet. What can I say to this guy that's both honest and compassionate, yet doesn't embroil me any further in his situation?

If he brings it up, all you can do is offer your "sadness" that this happened to him and ask questions about what his plans are.

Well, in your opinion, was he just completely hopeless? Or did he have some positive aspects to his performance? I think expressing your sadness that he won't be there next year is a good place to start.
