Aruba

DH and I are planning a long weekend trip to Aruba for our 3rd anniversary in August. We have plane tickets, but are looking for recs on where to stay, where to eat, and what to do. We are kind of middle-of-the-road travelers, not super budget, but not necessarily luxury. We will only have a few days so looking for advice on what to prioritize while we are there. Thanks for the help! =)

Re: Aruba

  • We are planning the same! (6 years not 3 but same idea)

hope you get some responses. I've looked and looked and am having a hard time choosing.

  • I love Aruba.  If you want to stay on Eagle Beach (low rise area) I'd recommend Bucuti.  If you want to stay on Palm Beach (high rise area) my fave is the Radisson but the Marriott and Hyatt (Hyatt has very small balconies though) are both nice choices.  For dining my fave restaurants were:

Flying Fishbone (must go as the sun is setting) - you eat right on the beach with your feet in the water

Madame Jeanettes - Best steak I've ever had in my life

    Texas D'Brazil - Churassco (sp?)

Garufo (sp?) - great cigar bar with live music

Ku Ku Kanuku (sp?) - Party Bus that bar hops and takes you to dinner at a private home

There are lots and lots of delicious dining choices on the island and their food is great.  It's been a couple of years since I've last been so I'm sure I'm missing plenty but those are a few ideas.  They also have casinos, and your standard Carlos & Charlies type places downtown.  Hope that helps a bit.  Also, I never felt unsafe walking around at night unlike some other islands.

  • Also check out Tripadvisor.com to compare the hotels and read reviews.  It'll help you get a feel for which you think you might like best.
  • Thanks for the ideas! The Radisson looks really nice and so do those restaurants. I'll be snooping around on TripAdvisor for more...Thanks! =)
  • I second Bucuti!  We went there on our honeymoon and it was awesome!

We also took a jeep ride to the other side of the island (our hotel helped us book it) which was totally worth it.  We have some amazing pics as that side of the island is totally wild and desert-like.

Skip the Aloe factory, but definitely buy some aloe products there.  I am in love with their burn gel and an aloe lotion we got and I am almost out of.  I want to go back just to get more!

As far as restaurants, we went to Windows on Aruba at the all-inclusive "next door" for a dinner that was really good, but definitely a splurge.  All the restaurants listed in a previous post sounded amazing too, but we didn't get to them :-(

I hope your trip is awesome!

  • I was there for my honeymoon. It's a very tourist-friendly place. They know their livelihood depends on tourists, so they always provide good service, and they speak English and take American dollars. I learned a few phrases in the native language out of respect (like "Masha danki", which means "Thank you very much"). I suggest taking a tour of the island, if you want more adventure than just laying on the beach. And go snorkeling if you can!
  • we are headed back in early May for our third trip, celebrating our 6th anniversary.  we LOVE the Radisson - it is a great resort, one of the nicest on Palm Beach, and in a great location.  Highly rec.  Restaurants:  Yemanja, 2Fools and a Bull, Passions.  The pier in front of the Rad has a great little bar called Bugaloe - live music and decent bar food at sunset doesn't get much better :)

Definitely do NOT do all inclusive - it is so not worth it in Aruba.  Too much great food, and no need to be "chained" to your resort.  Very safe, Americanized island.

  • Thanks for all the replies! We are definitely leaning toward staying at the Radisson now after checking it out more. We think we also definitely want to do a snorkeling tour. Any suggestions for snorkeling tour operators?

Jolly Pirates is who we always book with and always will. They crew is great to hang out with and the food the serve for lunch is fantastic. They also have a rope swing you can swing off the boat into the water after the snorkling is done.
