WWYD?

Hello all!

I was wondering if it is considered appropriate or not to contact HR to ask about the status of your application?

A little background: I interviewed with two different companies almost 2 weeks ago within a couple of days of each other. The positions I applied to are basically identical as far as duties and responsibilities. However, I really prefer Company A because they offer better pay and benefits as well as the opportunity to work from home. Company B offers the same type of position but with less pay and benefits and is strictly working from the office.

I was contacted today by Company B's HR that they would be contacting my references. I'm thinking I might be getting an offer from them soon. Since I really would prefer to work with Company A I was wondering if it would be ok for me to contact their HR to ask what my status was?

I don't want to seem pushy/annoying but I also don't want to end up accepting a position with company B and then get contacted by Company A.  However, I also don't want to not accept an offer from Company B not knowing for sure if I'm still in consideration with Company A or not.

If it makes a difference, Company A is a much larger program and I know they are hiring a lot of new people (over 20 people) so I'm thinking it may be taking them a little longer to get back to people.

Sorry this is long, any feedback is appreciated. Thanks.

  • I would say contacting HR is fine they are there to be the buffer for the decision makers. When I interview people and they follow up with me I find it annoying and it seems like they will be high maintenance. Im sure everyone has their own feelings about

  • I think it's perfectly fine to contact HR or the person who set up your interview. You can say something like "just checking on the status...do you need anything else from me..."

You can always ask for a few days to consider the offer fr

  • I think it's appropriate to follow up with whomever you were working with to setup the interviews.  However, I believe you do it once and only once.

  • Thanks for the replies! Normally, I have no problem playing the waiting game, but with an impending offer from company B I would at least like to try and find out if I'm even still being considered or not with company A. I definitely won't be contacting t
