favorite warm weather winter vacation!

Please help us decide where to go on a winter vacation.  Our must haves are warm weather, beach, and sun! Also, would like to keep it somewhat close to the states, and we would prefer not Mexico.  Thanks!

Re: favorite warm weather winter vacation!

  • The Yucatan Peninsula in Mexico (Cancun/Playa del Carmen/Tulum) is my favorite place for a winter getaway as it's warm, cheap, and absolutely beautiful.

Options outside of Mexico but relatively close to the US include the Dominican Republic, Jamaica, Costa Rica, Belize, Panama, St. Martin, Turks and Caicos, the Virgin Islands, Puerto Rico, the Bahamas, and Hawaii.

  • I live in Phoenix, so I take my vacations during the summer since it's so darn hot here that time of year :) When we go away, we typically go to Mexico (Riviera Maya and Cabo), but that obviously won't work in your case. Is there a reason why? Even if you have been to one area of the country before, there are many other areas to consider. There is Puerto Rico (we're heading there in April), USVI/BVIs, Jamaica, Dominican Repbulic, Costa Rica, or Belize. I've been to all except CR and DR. I would not go to the Bahamas that time of year, as it's cooler in the winter. You can also consider Miami or the Keys, though you do also take the chance of hitting a cold snap.

  • dh and i go to cancun/rm every december. but since you didn't want mexico (why?) what's your budget?
Friday, December 28 2012. The day I had emergency appendix surgery in Mexico and quit smoking. Proof that everything has a good side!! DH and I are happily child-free!! No due date or toddler tickers here!! my read shelf:

  • We love to cruise the caribbean.  It's often cheaper than going to a particular island.
  • We just got back from the BVIs. We chartered a sailboat complete with Captain and his wife who crews/cooks. It was like an AI on the water. Not cheap but we throughly enjoyed it. We cant wait to go back again and see some other islands. We went through VISailing.com. They provided great information on sailing the islands. The Capatin said that is their favorite agency (very professional and personable) ) but they do market through several.
  • If your requirements are really just warm weather, beach, and sun close to the US but not Mexico....

well that leaves all of the Caribbean and Central America.

You could just start plugging destinations into an airfare search and see what's cheapest.

Of places I've been in the region, I personally like Honduras, Colombia,  and Jamaica.

  • This is a re-post from another thread, but it makes sense here also: Go to Placencia, Belize! I am going at the end of the month and I can't wait. It's on a peninsula south of Belize City. You can stay at a fancy hotel, rent out a beach cabana or stay in a cheap hotel. This trip can be catered to all budgets. We are staying at The Placencia Hotel and Residences. The town has so much character, tons of restaurants, shops, and beaches. You can do tours of the Mayan Ruins, hikes through the jungle, etc. The place looks like a dream come true. Definitely Google it.

  • Florida! We've done Clearwater Beach, Miami Beach, Disney (with kids). I have been wanting to try the Gulft Beaches for a change, or the Sarasota area. So many beaches, each with their own atmosphere. I prefer Florida for quick trips, because the flights are shorter, etc.

  • Being from Boston, I'm all about the warm weather winter vacation, so thanks for this post! I personally LOVE traveling to Aruba when the weather sucks; such a relaxing, tropical and HOT destination! I've thought about going to Jamaica this year, has anyone been? Any horror stories?
