If you have known someone who had bariatric surgery...

My neighbor had it done at the beginning of the month and she has been having a very tough time.  I'm told she is in bed all day, and she is unable to keep anything down.  She hardly even drinks water.  I'd like to do something nice for her, but I'm unsure what.  Usually, after someone has surgery, I take them food.  This would clearly not be appropriate.  So, do you have any ideas of what I should do to make her feel a little better?

Re: If you have known someone who had bariatric surgery...

  • what about something to do while she is recovering?  Some flowers to brighten her room?  Or a couple hours of your time to help with something around the house (vacuuming, dusting, laundry, etc)
  • My cousin had it done in January, and she did pretty well, was back up and around in a week or so. She wasn't able to do major activity, but did want company. I don't know how well you know her, but if you're friends, she may appreciate having someone to do slow walks around the neighborhood while she begins to recover. Getting more active was the biggest challenge my cousin had.

  • Does she have pets?  Could you help out by taking her dogs for a walk?

Can she leave the house at all?  A manicure or pedicure would be a nice treat, along with some magazines.

A gift card to someplace for new clothes?  Shopping always makes me feel better (even if it's online)  She's likely going to go through several sizes fairly quickly so some extra money for clothes would be nice.

  • My mom had it done in the fall and was back to feeling fairly normal pretty soon after. I agree with pp, something nice to help her around the house, offer to pick up groceries, gift card for something for her, etc.
