Moving to Wilmington Area and Need Help!

Hi Ladies,

My husband just accepted a job offer at a hospital in Wilmington for the end of June. I'm due to give birth at the end of May to our first child, and our goal is to be moved into a short term lease by the end of June. We're planning to take a trip up to look at some towns, but what recommendations do you have? We would like a rental unit that is close to Wilmington, but in a safe, family friendly neighborhood if possible. I've heard the city is not the best place to live. Do you have any ideas, or even rental complexes that you would recommend? TIA!

Re: Moving to Wilmington Area and Need Help!

  • First off - welcome! And congrats on your new addition :)

Second - I wouldn't recommend living in the city. Some parts of it are nice but some are not. If you stay over near the Triangle section of the city, I would recommend that but try to find a house rental - no complexes.

What are you looking for? An apartment or a townhouse? There are some really nice townhouse rentals in the Pike Creek/Hockessin area. It's not far from the city but is much more family friendly.

  • Apartment or townhome are both options we are considering. What about the towns of Newport or New Castle? Are they nice locations? Thanks for your help!
  • We have a townhouse in pike creek/hockessin area and it is family friendly but still close to shops, restaurants, etc.

i work in new castle and it has some nice areas (old new castle) but also some sketchy ones.

I would check out Craigslist and realtor.com for rentals.  Some town home communities that are near me that are nice are limestone hills, north pointe, dennison ridge, mendenhall village. Prices for a 3 bedroom range from 1500-2000 FYI.

I moved to delaware 1 month before my little one was born last year so I know how stressful it can be! Good luck :)

  • Thank you so much! I'm trying not to stress too much:)
  • I'd stay away from the city with a brand new little one.

Newport is nice; I actually live near there & run almost into Newport proper on my usual route. Pike Creek, Hockessin, & Greenville are all nice & relatively short commutes to the city.

Congratulations on your new addition & best of luck with the move!
