Hey, everyone! I post a lot on thebump and lurk here, but thought it was about time to intro myself. I'm a new mom to 3 month old baby E and live in Delco. I just started back to work today and am being treated very gently by my coworkers, which means I've spent the day with a lot of free time to wish I was still on maternity leave (and which means I have had a lot of time to lurk here!).
Now my question... How did all you other moms out there go about finding a babysitter? My daycare hasn't been helpful and my neighbors only use family members. Care.com scares me a little, as I'd rather get a referral than choose a random profile. I'm just not sure how to go about finding someone, but DH and I could really use a date night. Thanks!
Re: Intro and Question
Hi and welcome!
We will be in a similar situation come September, because we really do not live close to our families.
Just a thought-Do you have any day camps around you? When I was in HS I was a camp counselor and I got A TON of baby sitting jobs from working there. You could ask the director if they recommend anyone in particular. Of course you may have to wait a few months, but this is the route that I may be taking.
Hope you had a smooth transition back to work!
Hi! We are planning to move to Delco this summer!
Our only babysitters are my parents and family. Sorry I can't be more helpful. Today I checked out the Y and am thinking of joining. They have Parents Night Out nights where they have babysitting on Friday nights from 6-9 for $5. I think we will check it out, but my son is 14 months- I wouldn't feel comfortable if it was a year ago, but maybe an option for you in the future. I hope you find someone because date nights are important!
Also- when I was in college (I went to West Chester) my sorority sisters and I were always babysitting for families in the area. Maybe look at the local colleges and see if you can find anyone that way. The families would stay with the sorority and just rotate through us until we graduated.
Where are you in Delco? I am in Havertown and have a sitter in Drexel Hill, but if I didn't have her, I would check out Bryn Mawr and Haverford Colleges
One time when my regular sitter wasn't available, I got a rec from one of my neighbors that worked out great! Are there other families in your area?

Hello and welcome! I too have a Feb 2013 "love bug"- literally- my DS was born on Valentine's Day.
I agree with pps- check out local schools. When I was in high school, there was a job board where people would call the guidance office with a job that needed to be filled and they would post them on a board for us. I remember babysitting jobs being on there. Good luck!
Unfortunately I'm of no help regarding a babysitter.
I just wanted to say welcome and congrats on your little one! Please stick around and keep posting!
Thanks, everyone, for the suggestions and the welcome!
I thought of checking out the local colleges - Widener is only 15ish minutes away from me - but I guess I'm a little hesitant to use someone who may not have much or any experience with infants. DH and I love E to pieces, yet we still can get frustrated with her, especially around bedtime... I can't imagine how frustrated someone else could get. Maybe I'm being unnecessarily nervous.
Eaglesfan - I'm in Glenolden, so just on the other side of Drexel Hill from you. I liked the neighbors suggestion, but, unfortunately, people around here never seem to leave, so all of them have parents just a few blocks away who watch their kids. I think this is the first time I've ever wished that my in-laws lived close by
