How to find a financial planner?

I've asked around and most of my friends use planners that take a %.

I'd like to find someone who charges a flat fee for a look at our budget and a good old fashioned "come to Jesus" meeting.  DH isn't listening to me and I'm hoping having a professional send the same messages will help drive things home....

Our IF journey: 1 m/c, 1 IVF with only 3 eggs retrieved yielding Dylan and a lost twin, 1 shocker unmedicated BFP resulting in Jace, 3 more unmedicated pregnancies ending in more losses.
Total score: 6 pregnancies, 5 losses, 2 amazing blessings that I'm thankful for every single day.

Re: How to find a financial planner?

  • We met with a planner from New York Life because we like the principals on which they base their investments and budgeting.  They do not get paid anything until you take out an investment or life insurance with them. So we liked being able to bring our budget, debts, investments, etc to them and have them tell us what we should or shouldn't be doing.

Having that 3rd person there really helped for us, and we meet with our planner once a year to see where we're at.

MMers here have a flat fee of $0 for reviewing budgets and many are really good at it. Also, no one will blow smoke up your butt here either, so if you want a "come to Jesus" look at your budget, sans a sales pitch, this is a good spot to be.

But it sounds like your big issue is not being on the same page budgeting-wise or financially with your husband and that you are looking for an unbiased third party to tell him A. Spending needs to be cut. B. Savings needs to be increased. C. And maybe some other financial matters like you maybe need more life insurance, or to cut up CCs.

Before you two go and spend money to get basic budgeting advice, you should look into info and books by Suze Orman, David Bach, and Dave Ramsey.

It's MHO, and others may differ, that most of the financial planning a couple needs is actually pretty simple and aside from possible complicated matters with trusts, estates, high value assets, and self-employed individuals, most people who have a moderate level of understanding can get all that they need for free or at a slim cost by doing their own research and by reading the above named authors.

Then, turn to experts when you are actually ready to purchase the insurance or set up the investments.

  • Thanks for the advice.  We are currently reading Ramsey's Total Money Make Over.  We plan to sit down and discuss our budget and goals soon.  I'm just trying to prepare a back up plan for if and when he balks on how conservative I feel we need to be.

    Can you be more specific?

There are a bunch of facts and figures available online that some MMers may be able to help you use to give your husband the "cold hard facts" regarding savings, etc.

What is the area for being conservative?
