Garment bag on an airplane?

DH and I are definitely not experienced flyers so I am hoping for some help.

We're leaving on Saturday morning and he has a suit and I have a satin dress that we're taking.  I would prefer to leave these items hanging in a garment bag instead of trying to cram these things in a suitcase and try to get the wrinkles out later.  Is that reasonable?  I figure that I can just lay the bag across the top of suitcases in an overhead compartment, right?  I just know that there are specific carry on size requirements that I'm concerned about.  Also, would this garment bag count as one of our carry ons?  Could this be one of our personal bags?

We're flying US Airways on a domestic flight if that is relevant.

I tried to find this info on the airline website but I didn't come up with anything.  Thank you for your help!

What aircraft are you flying?  If you're on a smaller Embraer, the overhead bin is barely high enough to fit a briefcase, so you might struggle a bit.  Otherwise, it should fit in the overhead fine as long as you find a bin that's not completely full of large rolling suitcases.  On domestic US flights, I've started having trouble finding space for even a small laptop bag on a full flight.

  • i'd make sure there's a pressing service where ever you're going. relying on having enough room on top of suitcases crammed into overheads isn't a good plan. assume it will be wrinkled as hell when you get to your destination. if it's not great-but at least you're prepared.
