Barcelona or Seville

We are going to be in Spain next month, after a trip to London and I am trying to plan where to stay. We will have from fri morning to tues evening. I have heard good things about Seville (authentic Spanish city) and Barcelona (museums, tourist attractions, etc). If you've been to either and could tell me what you liked about it and where you stayed, that would be sooo helpful. Thanks!

Re: Barcelona or Seville

  • Have you considered Madrid at all? We went to Barcelona and stayed at the Le Meridien on Las Ramblas. We didn't LOVE Barcelona, maybe it was because it was at the end of our European cruise and we were burnt out, but after Barcelona we made our way to Madrid and LOVED it.

In Barcelona we did all the touristy things... Sagrada Familia, all the Guadi stuff, etc... we thought it was eh.

  • I've been to both and while I love each of the cities, I prefer Seville over Barcelona. Seville is so incredibly beautiful and photogenic. The historical city center is compact and most of the major sights are within easy walking distance. Barcelona is also wonderful and has a ton of great sights but if I could only choose one to return to, it would definitely be Seville. Since you'll have about four days to play with, I recommend that you venture outside of Seville for at least one day. Cordoba and the white hill towns of Andalusia are two great options!

I've got entries in my travel blog on Barcelona, Seville, Cordoba, and the white hill towns of Andalusia.

  • I agree with TravelingJ.  But you really can't go wrong either way :)

We have been to both, and indeed, you can't go wrong with either city. My personal preference is Barcelona, as I happen to be a huge fan of Gaudi.

In Sevilla, we stayed in Vime Corregidor for 3 nights - it's on a quiet street, walking distance from all the central sights. In Barcelona, we spent a week (incl. 2 day trips) in Casa de Les Lletras - were very happy with location an the view. Have a great time, whatever  you decide!

  • Hi there! I actually lived in Barcelona for 3 years *waves*

My H & I are actually going there in June to visit friends and go to Sonar Festival :)

Our first flat was in the middle of the Gothic section of the city (El Borne) and the 2nd place we lived in was literally 2 streets away from Sagrada Familia, in fact, that was the view from my bedroom window for 2 years. Barcelona is an excellent city, but one thing you have to understand is that is very different from many cities in Spain because the region of Catalunya IS NOT Spain. They want to be separate and try to operate as such. They speak Spanish there, yes, but they also speak Catalan, which is mixture of Spanish, French, and Portugese. I think people who go there as tourists do not realize this and are expecting something completely different when they visit Barcelona. That said, it's a beautiful city, with beaches, lots of things to see and do, some of the best restaurants in the world, the people love to party there - and once you get to know Catalan people and understand them, they are actually quite nice.

If you are there the first Sunday of the month, most of the museums, including Picasso Museum are free entry. (that was where I spent all of my 'first Sundays' when I was living there since it was directly around the corner from my first flat) Also, MNAC - which is the Catalan art museum - that is free the first Thursday of every month. Las Ramblas is cool during the day, but you do have to be a bit careful at night in that general area because of pickpockets. They generally prey on women walking around in heels since it's easier target, btw. I would not really recommend eating anywhere along there either because those are the tourist trap places, so you won't really have such good service, although on one of the smaller streets off Las Ramblas there is a good tapas place. My absolute favorite restaurant in the city which is near the center - Unico. They have a 3 course prix fix menu for between 15-20 euros per person that includes a drink and if you order wine, they give you the whole bottle. Best. Restaurant. Ever. Not touristy either and the place is really super nice. http://unicorestaurante.com/

If you are wanting more info about Barca, check this website - you should be able to find info on hotels there:

    http://www.barcelonaconnect.com/

And also, if you are really adventerous and want to rent an apartment instead of traditional hotel, I believe you can find rentals through here:

    http://www.loquo.com/en_us

    and here: http://www.idealista.com/en/

If you want any more info, feel free to ask....oh, and ps - there is a small Dali museum in Barcelona, however, the REAL Dali museum is in Figueres, which is about 2 hours away by train. Sitges is also very nice city and is about 45 minutes-1 hour away by train ;)
