I just saw a movie in which a couple has trouble conceiving a child so they split up. I've realized this is a common story-line in movies, TV, books, etc. and it really irks me.

H & I really want children one day, but if for some reason one of us couldn't have a kid I wouldn't give up my marriage! It just seems like a lazy way for Hollywood to create discourse in a marriage and it annoys me.

That's my random rant for the evening.

I agree. H and I have already talked about it and agreed that wouldn't happen. Adoption is always an option. It is a lazy way out.

To play devils advocate here, it is a very stressful thing and I am sure it causes many separations because the marriage can't handle the stress, but Im sure hollywood makes it seems different then it is in real life. ha

Honestly, I think that is crazy. I would think that in a healthy relationship, you would lean on each other and be each other's support in that situation... not think about leaving.

This bothers me too. I know that trying to conceive is stressful, but to get divorced because of that is crazy. Especially when there are lots of other ways to have a family.

From going through the TTC process and having a loss I can see how it could happen. It is very stressful! I think it actually made DH and I closer and lean on each other more. I could see how it could go the other direction as well though. If your SO was not supportive or you were not on the same page as to the steps you were willing to go to, to have a kid it could happen. Though those marriages could just not be very strong and might not have lasted either way.

I think this is how I feel about it and inability to have a kid is just an easy way for Hollywood to break a couple up and then give a character issues. Especially when the SO remarries and has kids and the perfect life.

CPM it is a really recent movie so I don't want to give anything away. However, that movie reminded me of other movies, books, etc. and I suddenly felt like it was really common.

I totally agree. It seems Hollywood always some lazy reason to get divorced in there own lives and movies. I mean especially when there are other ways to have a children and there is adoption as well. I know a married women that have had troubles TTC and have MC it is so hard and devastating on both but they keep going and trying other ways and they support each other. I don't know why you would want to split up during one of the most difficult times of a marriage. It is to me selfish and lazy. It is a time to help each other and be there for support. i know when it is time for the H & I to TTC and if we have issues we know there are other ways to have children.

While I can understand both sides I think Hollywood takes it to the extreme and turns it into a non realistic issue. Yes this kind of thing actually happens but believe me the ones who split up due to this usually last years after starting this process. Hollywood turns it into crap honestly and unfortunately it is becoming a more common thing.

Annoying, indeed. I just get irritated in general when people take the opinion that you should get married solely to have children, or that having kids is what the purpose of marriage is. I married H for him, not for some possible future progeny!
