Medical question (runners in particular?)

Another slow day so figured I'd ask.

i have arch issues (pain).  I have it on and off for many years. 5 years ago or so I went to a podiatrist. Didn't like him and he said plantar fasciitis. I didn't think it was PF since my symptoms don't line up. A couple years ago I went to a different podiatrist. I thought she was better and said I over pronate and have posterior tibial tendonitis. She had me get an orthotic (not fully custom). I despise the orthotics SO much. Had them adjusted multiple times and finally gave up. I had some other health issues come up so it took a back burner. It's been about a year and a half since.

now that I'm running more its flaring up more and Im concerned about it being an issue. But I'm not sure what I should do. I don't think I want to go back to that podiatrist. Should I try another podiatrist or try more of an orthopedist/sports medicine group? Looking at the sports med/ortho group near me they say they treat posterior tibial tendonitis (but maybe they just mean surgically) and the foot drs treat arch pain. They also have physical therapists. So maybe PT might be helpful. But not sure if ortho would be the way to go (I think surgery and bones with ortho and this is tendon issues). I just want another opinion I guess to have some alternative management. Expensive orthotics that I can't wear because they cause so much pain is not the answer for me. But I don't want to stop all activity and stop running!

Not sure if anybody will have any advice but thought I'd ask

  • Based on what you have already been through I think that I would try another avenue. Perhaps the ortho or the PT would be able to offer stretches and strength exercises that could compensate for your over pronation.
  • My mom has plantar fascitis and she went to a sports medicine doctor.  They gave her exercises to do and braces to sleep in - since her main goal was to not to have the surgery.   So I would think that perhaps the same kind of doctor could assist you as well.
  • Do you have a PCP?  And if you do, do you have a good relationship with him/her?  That's where I'd start - to see if my PCP could get me a correct diagnosis and treatment.  And if she/he couldn't, to get directed to someone that can.

my Pcp is ok but I don't see him that often. I asked him about a recommendation last time and he recommended the podiatrist, which is why I originally went there. I don't mind seeing my Pcp but I hate to go just to be referred elsewhere.

i think I'm going to contact the ortho/sports med group. I like the idea of trying something different.

most sports med folks defer this to the foot/ankle surgeons (either podiatrists with extra years in surgery or the ortho foot/ankle surgeons)

  • I wish I could refer you to someone up there!

Anyway, I would definitely go with a sports medicine doctor - from what I remember, from working with docs in a non-clinical setting, the sports med docs are most likely athletes themselves (in whatever capacity of the word athlete!) and understand better what you are going through.

So, I would start there - and keep trying different avenues until you feel like you get the right answer for you. I can't stress that enough because of the pain I saw DH go through with his shoulder a couple of yeaars ago - the one doc he went to 3x finally told him he had to live with the pain. (WTH?) On the referral of a fellow Nestie's DH, my DH went to another doc - a sports med one- and got the correct diagnosis and treatment, and has rarely had problems since.

    Good luck!
