This will get lengthy, and I'll try to be as clear as possible.
I work in the audio department of a large church. When I started, there were two main positions and they were forming a third, which is what I was being hired for. I was brought on in the summer of 2009 by my boss, D. The position was still being developed though, we needed some technical upgrades, money to be spent bla bla bla, so it was more of a basic roll when I first got there. That fall, the company went through some unexpected changes Basically, they gave me the job of one of the main guys and let him go. I did a really good job and mostly enjoyed what I was doing. During that time, D brought in various other people to fill the original position I never really got to do anything with, they had finally expanded it somewhat. These people never really did a good job and never lasted more than a few months.
Noteworthy at this time is the fact that I am a contract employee, not
actually on staff. I am self-employed, receive no benefits, PTO, don't
get taxes taken out of my check, etc. I am rostered on for all weekend
needs, where my main position lies, and then they give me a monthly
schedule based on what events are going on around campus. There is no real guarantee of hours and there are slow times during the year. In contrast, there are busy times where I am there 50+ hours. No overtime though. We have a verbal agreement that I will get at least 30, but sometimes it's less. D has always been good about asking me if I have enough though and "finding" hours for me to come in.
Last summer, D came to me and was hatching this plan. The main guy wasn't doing what they wanted so his idea was to bring in another guy who used to work there, move the other guy to my position (I guess they felt bad letting him go) and put me back into the one I was originally hired for. I had mixed feelings about it, but it was pretty logical, so that is what we did.
A few months later, the entire department was rocked with the news that D's job was changing. He would no longer be in control of the entire department, only one specific area and they were bringing in a new guy, P, to fill in where D used be in charge. Since that time, they made a very obvious effort to keep the two departments completely separate in terms of who to take direction from and out of who's budget you were to be paid if you are a contract person.
This concerned me because there are very few contract people left. I have always come out of D's budget, he has always been my boss. My situation is unique in that I directly effect both departments. My job is the only "hybrid". When this all went down, D came to me and said to keep invoicing him no matter what, and that he is trying to "protect" me. The director of the other department, M, had me come in to meet with him and said that for anything weekend related, I am to answer to him and P, anything broadcast related, I go to D. So that's what I did.
Since then, the position has not expanded. We need upgrades to get the
job done well and no one will push them through. I sit in the studio, do
my job and no one bothers with me unless something is wrong. I can only
work with what they give me and it is frustrating that not only do I
have the right tools, nobody seems to care. P had even expressed to me several times that he doesn't know why we have someone doing what I do because every other place he knows of does it another way and it would save money.
A few weeks ago, P asked me to start sending 2 invoices from now one. One to him for all the weekend hours and events and one to D for anything I do for broadcast. Under these stipulations, the brunt of my hours are paid for by P's budget. I have no idea what they have carved out for contract people, but they are likely taking a big hit by adding me on.
Yesterday, D came to me asking what I thought about a full time job. Like a regular 9-5. He says he is getting rid of his assistant and building it into more of an opportunistic position, rather than just paperwork. It would be working directly with him and the TV Department (3 dudes I already know) and assisting them. I would no longer be doing anything audio related (what I went to school for) and I would not be working any events like I do now. No weekend services. But I would be a full time, benefit receiving employee. With a set schedule and no anxiety over having my position axed.
So now that I've spent the entire post trying to convince myself that I should try to take it, what would you do?
Re: WWYD-Very Looooong
Would you be happy doing the 9-5 job?
I would probably want to take the 9-5 job with benefits. That way you have a set schedule and able to spend your evenings and weekends with DH and the kiddo.
I forget your baby-sitting arrangements - I believe your MIL watches the kiddo some - does she do it all the time? Would you be able to find good baby-sitting arrangements?
I would probably do everything I could to take the job...if I liked it.

Nice for the daycare. If I was pretty sure I would like the position, I would probably take it. I think you would probably like the schedule better??
Plus, it sounds like otherwise your contract job could possibly be on the line? For job security, I would also take the full-time position. Then if you don't like it, maybe you could find another job later on?

Based on the rate they cycle through audio people, do you think there's a chance you could always go back to that if you end up not liking this new job? Especially since you've done the other job that might not be on the line quite as much.
I think hours-wise, I would probably take it if you think you'll like it. I've found that the people you work with/for can have a huge impact on how happy you are at work, so knowing you already like the people in this new job (and that your boss wants you to be happy) is all pretty big.
Good points. I definitely agree with all of this!

Personally, I'm a fan of the 9-5 scheduling. That gives you your weekends back and you know how much you'll be working (so you don't have to worry about making your 30 hrs / week).
Do you currently have benefits through your husbands job?

I would go to the 9-5, M-F, sallery job. It has job security along with benefits and a reliable schedule. The points made above on working with people you like makes a difference is very true.
I'm a little late to the game, but I say take it as well.
The other job seems to be somewhat at risk with P taking over,
so if you feel the assistant position is more stable, then it is definitely worth it.
Good Luck!
Sorry if this looks weird. On mobile and weird things are happening!
