I work at a law firm and we have an account with Yellow Pages. The salesperson in charge of our account keeps calling me "kiddo" every time we speak on the phone. While it's probably true that I'm young enough to be his kid, it still bothers me when he says it. Is there a polite way to tell him this is rude or should I just grit my teeth and take it?
Re: Annoying Salesperson
If it bothers you then say something.
However, I would make it more light-hearted than what the PP suggested and I would do it face-to-face or on the phone. NO EMAIL!
I personally would say something like, "Haha I noticed you always call me "kiddo." Do I remind you of someone else? Have conversation with the answer and then say, I appreciate the endearing term, but would it be okay for you to call me ____?"
This person probably doesn't even realize the "kiddo" comment is bothersome and a stern comment from you may make them raise an eyebrow in surprise, which could easily turn into a "water cooler" conversation between the salesperson and one of your co-workers.
"You'll never believe what _____ said to me. I was totally shocked......"
Perfect. Thanks!!!
