Out of state counseling?

Hey everyone! Has anyone ever done counseling with a family member that lives out of state? If so, how does that even work???

Re: Out of state counseling?

  • Not a personal experience, but a friend of mine who was going through marriage counseling phone-conferenced her mom in to a session due to some issues that were brought up previously. Not sure how that would work in the long term though.
  • Did skype/google+ counseling a couple of times(right before getting married we were in separate states).  It was actually not bad.
  • It did help my husband. It's a little more "distant" than a traditional session, IMO, but it's comfortable with everyone in their own personal places. Also, you have a close-up on people's faces. It also depends on how everyone feels about communicating online-some people are actually better at it.

    We did a three-way call.

There are very strict laws about this kind of thing.  If I, as a mental health worker, am licensed in one state, I am only permitted to provide mental health counseling in that state, and only to residents of that state.  If a client is on vacation in another state and wishes to engage in telemedicine for the duration of their vacation, but is still a legal resident of the state in which I am licensed, then that's fine.  However, if they are a legal resident of a state in which I am not licensed, this is not permitted.  I would recommend you speak with the counselor with whom you intend to do the work and find out what the laws are specific to your case, and tread carefully.  Good luck and hope this helps.
