Calling the US from Jamaica

My husband and I will be chaperoning 29 teenagers on their senior trip to Jamaica in a few weeks.  What is the best way to call the US from Jamaica while we are down there?  The resort offers wi-fi in the lobby and I've thought of using Skype, but wanted to see if there were other options.  TIA!

This. I'm guessing some of the teens are going to want to let their parents know they have arrived safely? I would say e-mail. I've heard of people adding international plans to their cell phones while they are on vacation, but I don't know anything about that...I've never done it.

With Verizon and an international phone, it's easy.  You just call them and they add it on, really cheap.  Once it's on your phone, you can use it anytime you travel, but you'll want to find out what the price per minute is. I only use this as a back-up for long trips (a month or longer), because it's much cheaper to use something like a magic jack, but it's not a bad option to have.

If you are ever away for a long time, you may also wish to knock down your regular plan while you are away (I reduce my regular "friends and family" minutes so it offsets any pay-per-minute calls).

  • If its just to say "I've arrived safetly" and their parents have a cell then I say text. I just did this a month ago from Cancun. I took my phone off airplane mode, sent my mom one text (the text cost .50)made sure it went through and then promptly put my phone back in airplane mode(where it stayed the rest if the week). The rest of the week I just used the free wifi and emailed back and forth with my mom (she was watching my cat). Ps. I did the samething when we were in Jamaica in 2009.
