Could use some good thoughts

DH and I have been trying to get pregnant since late November.  I had one funky cycle after birth control and then my body re-regulated and we had 4 cycles of perfectly timed sex.  Nothing happened.

So I had an annual appointment with my OBGYN and casually mentioned we'd been trying and it hadn't happened yet.  He offered me the chance to do lab work (hormonal stuff) to see if that was the issue and ultrasounds to help us with timing as well as telling DH that he should get a semen analysis.  Well, I went for my blood work and it looked great and DH went for his semen analysis...

And it was abnormal.  Low count, low motility and terrible forward progression.  Basically he has sperm (14 million, they like it over 15 million so this isn't too awful), and 25% of them are moving (they like over 40% motility) but almost none of them make any progress in forward motion.  Needless to say, I cancelled my ultrasound.

It looks like we may not get pregnant the "natural" way.  We are devastated because we so desperately want to start a family.  We are hoping we can get his counts up with medication (vitamins and he may need testosterone) and that we can do IUI vs IVF.  The only good part about this is that we will both get fully tested to make sure that this is our only barrier and that I don't have any issues like blocked tubes, etc.

We have an appointment at the IVF Clinic (they don't ONLY do IVF) for Wednesday and DH has to see a urologist the following Wednesday.  We will have more information then.  In the meantime, I am just so scared that this won't happen for us.  We wanted a big family (like 3-4 kids) and if we have to do IVF every time we want to get pregnant, that may not happen.

Re: Could use some good thoughts

  • Thoughts and prayer for you.  On the bright side, you guys are moving towards getting some answers which will give you a better idea of what you can do.  Try not to focus on the possibility of having fewer than 3-4 kids because having one healthy baby is a blessing.  It sounds like you guys will be able to have that even if you need a little extra help.  Good luck with everything!
