FTM: talk to me about childcare

I know that we all come from different COL areas so instead of asking what is the amount you pay for childcare, I figured I'd go a different route. How much percentage wise do you pay for child care monthly?

I'm trying to come up with our budget to include baby related items and I thought this may help.

  • We don't have children yet, but we know where we want our future children to go and roughly how much it costs.

It would be about 15% of our take home pay. We live in a LCOL area though.

  • Full time care in Seattle is ~40k a year. We don't have kids yet but I did some research because we're ttc soon.
  • For one baby it will be 15% of our weekly combined take home.
  • First- I love your signature and puppy baby announcement. We did something similar with our pit mix :)

I'm still working on the whole budgeting thing so our take home pay varies a little bit per month depending on 401k contribution, etc. The easiest math for me is to day the DC our LO will be going to in Sept will be about 12% of our net annual salaries.

Is that for a nanny? I have friends in downtown Seattle who pay $1600 a month for a quality center daycare. I live in Pierce County, 40 minutes south of Seattle, and I pay $600 monthly, for 4 days a week, at a small licensed (and great) in-home daycare. OP, obviously prices vary greatly!

We pay around 30% of our take home pay for childcare.  We have retirement contributions taken out, so it would be a lower percent of our total income.  We have 2 kids who go to a day care center 3 days a week and have a nanny 2 days a week.  Our costs would be similar if we went full time with either one.
