Baby daddy trouble

he wants to commit suicide I cant help him what do I do. does my baby grow up with out a father or do I have him commited

Re: Baby daddy trouble

  • It sounds like he's very unhealthy.  From my experience with suicide threats, you should always treat them seriously, even if the person isn't serious.  If they aren't serious you'll teach them that the threat will not be taken lightly and they'll be less likely to make it again.  If they are serious then you'll be doing everything you can do to save them (he needs the help of professionals - the only thing you can do is refer him to one).

On a technical note, I don't believe you can lawfully commit him.  But you can ask the police to keep him for a 72-hour mental health watch and they will do an assessment to see if he, indeed, needs to be held without his permission.

  • Please don't use the term baby daddy. It's unsophisticated and just plain tacky.

You are not responsible for his behavior.  Understand that people use suicide threats as part of manipulation.

And to have somebody committed is another whole story.

If you're living with this guy and he threatens suicide, call the police. Have them take him to a hospital.

  • Make sure he has good life insurance and that you're the beneficiary, I guess.

This.  While it could be bullsh!t, I don't tend to take those threats lightly.  Having lost two people to suicide, I wouldn't advise you ignore this.  Regardless of what you think (or we think), whether or not you believe he's serious and capable of ending his life, it's too serious a threat to ignore.  Call the police.
