Buying a house with asbestos roof and shingles
We are currently looking at a house from the 1920's but it has asbestos shingles and roof. Don't know if this is good or bad? Any thoughts or info? The only thing I know about asbestos is that its bad. Thanks!
Re: Buying a house with asbestos roof and shingles
Our house was built in 1928....the inspector noticed asbestos shingles on the back of the garage (the rest is covered in siding), and said most likely, the house itself has them as well, but you can see them because the entire house has siding on it, covering it up. It's only a problem if the shingles were to break and get asbestos particles in the air. You could have it removed so you don't have to worry about this, but it requires special removal and disposal (think guys in hazmat suits) and is very expensive. Most people just cover it with siding instead because it's easier and cheaper. My father works as a contractor and told me that unless you are chewing on the shingles, it's not really something to worry about.
Do you love this house? If it's not enough to deal with this, then I'd say keep looking. If you do love it and want to make an offer, you could probably use this as a bargaining chip
