Cook Islands

I posted this on the Knot honeymoon board - but thought I would post it here too...

I'm looking for travel recommendations for the Cook Islands.  I had a trip fall through and I have to travel on Air New Zealand - so I'm limited in areas to travel to.  I've been to French Polynesia and Fiji - so that is why I'm looking at Cook Islands (along with the cheaper flights).  This is a fairly last minute booking - will be leaving June 16th for 2 weeks.  I love researching the vacations and travels that I take- but this time I'm limited on time and need to decide on places to stay.
So - any recommendations for which island(s) to stay, accommodations on the different islands that you would recommend, etc... would be greatly appreciated!!!  I'm not so worried about budget - since airfare is already taken care of.  I just don't want to break the bank!  I'm looking for a relaxing, beautiful place to enjoy.  It doesn't have to be the swanky 5 star resorts - although I do enjoy being pampered...
I'd love to hear what Jells2dot has to say - since I believe she recently was in the Cook Islands.  But if anybody else can chime in with information that would be great!
THANKS!!

I went a couple years ago and have a pretty thorough post about it in my blog. We were only there for a week but did manage to stay on both Aitutaki and Rarotonga. I love to hike and the Cross Island Track is one of the best day hikes I've ever done, so I prefer Raro but Aitutaki was lovely, too. If I could do it over I'd stay at the Sunset Resort on Raro. I wanted a hotel closer to Muri, but after staying there it wasn't that big of a deal.

Good luck with planning! If you do a search for the Cook Islands you get a couple posts that Maggie78 commented in, and she's been several times. She was the one who put the bug in my ear about going.

Travel is fatal to prejudice, bigotry, and narrow-mindedness, and many of our people need it sorely on these accounts. Broad, wholesome, charitable views of men and things cannot be acquired by vegetating in one little corner of the earth all one's lifetime.
