Montreal in the summer -- no A/C?

We're heading up to Montreal in July and are looking at apartments for rent.  Are we nuts for booking a place without A/C?  Not many apartments seem to have it, and I've been reading that July is the most humid month there (80s/90s temps).  Thanks!

Re: Montreal in the summer -- no A/C?

  • I lived in Montreal for two summers, and it IS very hot and humid there in July. That said, there is a lot going on out of doors, and many Montrealers take full advantage of it; from jazz festivals and live music in the streets, to the F1 Grand Prix, to just sitting and playing guitar in the park. It really is the best time to visit the city.

It is true that many apartments (especially houses and walk-up apartments) do not have A/C.  It can get extremely hot indoors, so plan to bring fans and lots of light clothing, or try and find a place with A/C for a bit more $$.

  • Where are you from and what's normal July weather to you?  Those temps might be hot to someone from Vancouver, but will seem nice and cool to someone from Miami.  Are you used to humidity?  If you're not, everything might feel heavy and sticky and it almost might feel like it is harder to breathe.

Personally, being that far north, I wouldn't be too worried about not having a/c.  Keep in mind that the temperatures that you listed would be the highs for the day (and above average highs even).  As long as you keep the doors and windows closed in the apartment during the day and only open them at night when the temperatures are cooler (50s/60s), the place should stay comfortable.

  • I'm originally from Hilton Head, SC and my husband is from Montreal. We travel to Montreal very often and in July, it is VERY hot and humid (and this is coming from someone who's used to it in the southern U.S.) I remember being very surprised my first time there. I personally would not stay in Montreal without A/C during that month, but it's doable if you can bear it.

  • Thanks, all!  I really don't like humidity, so I'm going to err on the safe side and go for the A/C.
