DH and I currently rent a 3 bedroom apartment that we are content with for time being and want to buy a house. We are working on saving up a dp and I have ideas as to what our house budget should be and we would like to start a needs and wants list for our house. I like to scan the market from time to time to see what is in our price range and if it fits our needs and wants list. I think if we go to a few open houses on properties in our price range to get ideas on what we can truly afford and get that it would be productive. What do you think about this or should I hold off any house hunting/open houses until we have a dp saved up and/or pre-approved for a home.
Re: Buying Process
I'd definitely start looking now, just to see what the market is like in your area. You will be able to start getting an idea of what you do and don't want, and also what those things cost. Depending on your market, however, you want to make sure that you don't fall in love with a house that might sell before you are ready to buy!
We are going through house hunting right now (long distance - moving about 500 miles away) and started about 6 months before our move date. We are taking one last trip in a few weeks to take the final steps before we put in an offer. Our pre-approval is good for 90 days; typically, they are 60-90 days. I can't tell you what the house budget should be, but I think a general rule of thumb is 25-35% of your income, depending on other debts that you might have (student loans, credit cards, child support, stuff like that).
