BF'ing and WW

has anyone done this? my son will be 1 in a few weeks (NOOOOO) and I have to lose some weight but we are still BF'ing.  When I signed up and added in the nursing (exclusively) it seemed like SOOO many points! I switched it to supplementing and it looks more reasonable but I'm wondering if I'm going to mess up my supply now.  DS is nursing whenever we are together (before work, after I get home and before bed ... along with a night feeding if he wakes up which he has been doing way too often lately). and eating solids 3 times per day. I only pump once a day because I have an insane stash to get through.

 Thoughts? experiences??

Talk to your meeting leader. I'm sure this is not the first time they've heard this question.
  • I'm doing it  online :-(

Call a local center (or stop by). I'm sure they can help you out.
  • After one year weight started peeling off my body while nursing. Good luck!

I did WW and was exclusively pumping. I didn't use all of my extra points, and my supply was fine. I would say that if you have that stash as a back up, you have some wiggle room. Start with all of the points you get, and slowly back off if you feel like it's too many points.

And just to clarify-I mean reduce the number of extra points you get for bfing-obviously don't go below the regular amount.

I know that women talked about this in our support group before and I think the above answer is what they said. I just wanted to add then while doing this, especially with the summer don't forget your water.

  • Thanks ladies.  I feel like I am being so selfish by wanting to lose weight because it can mess with his milk but I also feel so unhappy with how my body looks! I initially lost a bunch of weight after he was born, especially because I wasn't taking great care of myself during the NICU period but then I've slowly gained a good bit back.  So yesterday I finally said to myself that I need to do something and I feel like WW will be a good balance. I love that they care enough to take this into consideration! although I feel like 14 extra points a day is a LOT!

  • It can be very difficult to lose weight while nursing - even if you're trying. Your body needs a certain amount of body fat to make milk and it will cling to it.

There's nothing wrong with eating healthier and trying to get to a more comfortable weight but don't be discouraged if it doesn't come off easily or at all. Sometimes people lose a lot of pregnancy weight initially and then their body clings to the last 10-15 lbs until the baby is weaned. Your body needs more calories and fluids when nursing then when pregnant and your appetite will def be stimulated to compensate for what the body sees as a caloric deficit if you diet.

I had that experience with my daughter. My first 25 lbs melted off then I clung to another 10-12 until I stopped bf at 1 year. As soon as I weaned my appetite totally changed and the rest of the weight fell off with little effort.

    Good luck!
