Excursions: Book through resort or online in advance?

Hello,
Does anyone have any recommendations?  I prefer booking through the resort, however it seems to be cheaper online in advance.

Thoughts, advice, experiences...

Re: Excursions: Book through resort or online in advance?

  • There are pros and cons to each way I think.

If you book online in advance, you can typically better research the excursions and the companies.  If you're heart is set on a certain excursion, it is nice to have your spot reserved and know that it won't sell out.  Like you said, you may also save money.

However, by booking in advance, you lose your flexibility.  When you wake up and just feel like having a beach day, the scuba diving that you have booked may not seem so awesome.  The weather can also be a factor.  If you're exploring some ruins, that might not be the best thing for a rainy day.

Personally, I'm too much of a planner to not have it all set up in advance.  I like to know the exact costs and be sure that I have our seats reserved.

I don't necessarily think there is a right or wrong way to do this though.  Where are you going and what fun excursions are you looking into?  I'm just curious.  Good luck!

  • We are headed to the Mayan Riviera near Playa Del Carmen.  We plan to do the Tulum excursion and sunset booze cruise.
  • Both have their advantages like the PP stated.  If you wait until you get there, you can sometimes haggle on the price.  I like to wait until I get there because I like to gauge how I'm feeling and what the weather will be.  In RM their will be tons of those excursions so you should have no problem getting a spot after you arrive.

When we went to Costa Rica we did some of each. If I could get a discount booking with an outside company ahead of time I did. Otherwise I waited for flexibility and see what else was there when we arrived.
