I'm a modern art lover, but I don't get this

How did this painting sell for almost $44 million? I like it, though I'm more a Jackson Pollock style modern art girl, but this price is just astounding to me. Article here

CROSSING THE LINE: A bidder plunked down nearly $44M for this simple, or simplistic, Barnett Newman canvas.

  • That is crazy!  I can't imagine spending even $100 on this, especially given that it looks like something Mason or Garrett could paint.
  • Clearly I need to switch career tracks to modern art.

    Yes

  • Unbelievable.  Think of what else that guy could have done with $44 million dollar.  I could have sold him one of Jake's pieces from preschool for $2 and it would look the same.

complete ditto to this! Though I admit that I am not a modern art lover at all.

  • It looks like a piece of DIY art from a show on HGTV.
  • I don't understand all art. But that is the great thing about it, as they say Art is in the eye of the beholder. 44mil seems like a lot to me for anything, much less art. But I can appreciate the tones of blue on that canvas. It isn't a flat blue, but rather has a lot of depth. I couldn't replicate it, but at the same time I certainly wouldn't be the one paying that much for it either. so call me neutral on this one.
  • Listen to you being all smart! The only thing I know about art is, well, nothing - I just know if it looks nice to me but I couldn't tell you why! :)
