Baby Update--scared of the possibilties.

I went to the OB on Monday and he looked at the report from my ultrasound that I had done on Thursday. He was saying all along that he would not remove my fibroid  and that it would hopefully shrink after my pregnancy. The doctor who did the ultrasound said the same thing. Well now he is saying that there is a good possibilty that because of the location and size of the fibroid, he may have to remove it during my c-section and IF (a big if) it bleeds too much he would have to do a hysterectomy. I freaked.

He said he will need me to sign a consent form for the fibroid removal and the hysterctomy. I asked what would happen if I didn't sign it. He said then I would have to try to labor but there is a good chance my contractions would make me bleed too much and they would have to do the c-section anyway. He couldn't answer a lot of my questions because it said it all depends on what happens on the operating table. I am so scared. I am only 33. The last thing that I want is a hysterectomy since this is my first child and we are planning on one or two more.

  • I am so sorry. I hope that you don't need the hysterectomy. Hopefully all will go well and Liliana will get here healthy and will get siblings in the future.

Thank you. I am just so shaken up by all this. I was planning on calling the doctor who did my ultrasound to get her opinion on this and she isn't available because she is on rounds at a different hospital for the next two weeks. I've been researching the removal of fibroids during c-sections and I just keep coming up with everyone saying the same thing, "the risk is too dangerous because of the blood loss". I know I have to just trust my doctor and pray that he will make the best decision while I am on the operating table, but that's hard to do! The "what if's" keep entering into my mind.

  • Oh Tara. I am so so sorry. That is a ton to handle all at once. You know you have my thoughts and prayers that everything will go smoothly. I hope that your baby girl (and you!) will be healthy and that you'll be able to have another one. In the meantime, I know it's super hard but try to relax a bit. You deserve it! = ) *hugs!*

  • WOW! That is a lot of information to swallow. I asked my doctor if he thought my fibroid would interfere with me being able to have a natural birth and he told me he didn't think so. He also told me they WOULD NOT operate on the fibroid during delivery because of the risk of blood loss. He said in 30 years of practicing he has not run into a case where a fibroid caused a problem so badly during delivery that it had to be removed. He said it is just too risky. I've been told that after the pregnancy the fibroid should shrink and not be a problem anymore. If my doctor told me what yours did I would be FREAKING OUT too. That is so crazy that they are thinking they will have to take those extreme measures. Maybe you should get a second opinion if possible. I would not want to have a hysterectomy after only one child, so I'm in the same boat as you there.

First my doctor made it seem like it was just a casual decision. he said, "Yeah, I'll take the fibroid out during the c-section." Then when I showed concern he changed his tone and made it sound like he might have no choice because the fibroid might be in the way of the baby.

My fibroid is 9.5cms and it is right in the way of the birth canal. When we see it on the ultrasound, it is right under my uterus, right where my baby's head is.

In that case I definitely see why they would want to do a c-section. I don't see why they would want to do anything other than that though. The way my doctor talks to me it sounds like fibroid surgery is a minefield during delivery.

  • I will be thinking about you!
  • I would definitely get a second opinion on this before it happens.

  • I can't get a second opinion now. I am all set to deliever at xxx hospital and because of my terrible health insurance plan, I am on charity care there. This means that whatever my insurance won't cover, the hospital will pick up. It's too late to try to get charity care at the other hospital in the area. Plus, I really like my hospital. My OB is the only high risk OB that does c-sections at this particular hospital. So even if I got a second opinion, I wouldn't be able to have that doctor do the c-section.

  • That is a lot to process right before you are due.  Keeping you in my T&Ps and that they don't have to do a hysterectomy.  I would just try to focus on a safe and healthy delivery right now at least as much as you can.  HUGS!
