Would you call the pedi?

DD, my 2.5 year old, has been having 3-4 bowel movements a day for about the past week.  She's usually a 1 some times 2 a day pooper.  The are all pretty soft dispite the bananas I've been feeding her.  Normally if I were to feed her a banana she wouldn't poop for 3 days.  Nothing has changed in her diet and she doesn't seem ill.  She has two second year molars that aren't all the way in yet so she may be teething (I caught her chewing on her crib the other day).

I have heard that teething can cause soft stools but she has all of her teeth and she's never had that happen.

Yesterday she pooped in the morning, at the beginning of nap, at the end of nap, and one at bedtime - all soft.  Would you wait it out a little longer or call the pedi?  Of course this happens right AFTER she has her well visit.

Re: Would you call the pedi?

  • it wouldn't alarm me unless it was watery/explosive or she had other symptoms like stomach cramps, a fever, lethargy.

agree with above. About that age daycare told me DD was going more often. I ended up asking Tobi about and she told me it was common in toddlers. Something with the absorbtion of water in their intestines. If she wasn't herself I think I would worry more. Or had a fever.

Oh, that's interesting.  How long did it last?  She will only poop in her bed, so it's really interrupting her sleep.

humm..... trying to think. Must have been a week or so. Sorry..... my memory is failing today. I woudl think had it lasted a month or something they I would have called the ped. Joys of Motherhood, right? :)
  • I agree with the others.  I wouldn't call just yet.  If there is no fever, no other symptoms, what are they likely to do?  Take your money and send you home and tell you to follow up in a few days if it doesn't subside.  It doesn't even sound like it's diarrhea, so I wouldn't be alarmed at all.  DS sometimes poops 1x per day, other times he poops 3 times a day.  The consistency isn't the same all the time and unless there is something accompanying it, I just change the diaper and move on.  It all sounds fine to me...but, then again, who am I?  :)  Good luck.
  • I just called the ped yesterday for M's (28 months) 3 day bout of diarrhea.  Since it was only happening once a day and M did not have a fever nor have signs of dehydration, she did not need to be seen.

If it persists more than a week, I was told to bring her in even without other symptoms.

Nurse recommended BRAT diet and switching her to 2% while she is sick (M is still on whole milk for weight gain).

  • We had the same thing happen a few weeks ago for about a week.  We also did the bananas and it didn't help.  Things then went back to normal.  I thought it was related to potty training but I'm not sure.
