ha! I told DH the same thing. Between this and not having to pay any medical bills I'm sold. A canadian I met last week told me she moved to canada strictly because of our health care system. She has 5 kids over there and didn't have to pay a dime.
Itis a really food system we have up here. The free healthcare also means their are no fees for labour and delivery. I was shocked when I found out how much it costs in the states. We also get a year mat leave (if you can affors it) getting 55% of your income.
The downsides are high taxes and everythingis more expensive here. My mom is giving us miney for ds bedding for his birthday and dh happens to be going cross the boarder for work the next week so he js going to target there and saving about $30!II

nope. I don't and have never called him a socialist. I'm not a fan of government in general so I likely have complained about it over there.
I distinctly remember you railing against having to pay higher taxes to fund the public safety net, so I guess it's a little surprising to see you advocating that the government should pay you to procreate.

as much as it sounds awesome to not have to pay for anything medically related I know I would have a problem paying higher prices for things in the store like the poster stated above. The grass always seems greener I guess. I'm wondering if this is like the child deduction we get on our taxes every year. Do they get the child deduction and baby bonus?
I'm not Canadian, so I don't know whether they get both, but either way, both the child deduction and the baby bonus are government programs to subsidize your choice to have children. It's just really weird to see a self-identified anti-government fiscal conservative promoting either one. Your ability to not experience cognitive dissonance is very impressive!
I'm not completely conservative across the board. I'm fiscally conservative that's true, but I'm socially moderate.
Just to clarify a few things... the "baby bonus" is now call the Child Tax Benefit - meant to supplement the cost of raising kids. There is also a tax deduction just for having a baby, and of course deductions for child-related expenses - daycare, sports, etc.
It really does pay to have kids around here.

Older post but the boards are slow. I live in Canada. Me and DH get about $600 per month from the government. We have 2 kids and he makes about $35,000 per year. I'm a SAHM. After paying daycare for 2 kids, I would have been making about $600 per month so we decided we would have me stay home. The money from the government is reduced by $100 per month once a child turns 6 (this is around the time they start grade 1). Your monthly entitlement is re-calculated every July and adjusted depending on whether your income went up or down.
