DH is a truck driver (hazmat tanker) he doesn't get a normal lunch break, and he doesn't like cold foods. Not all of the loading terminals have microwaves. He eats ALOT and last month we spent $1800 on food. He is gone 14 hours a day minimum so he is buying breakfast/lunch/dinner. Yes, he has issues. It's not ALL him but the amount of that which is from family eat out dinner, is probably $100-200 for all four of us per month, and that's stretching it. And groceries are about $100/week including the girls special milk, etc.
Besides treating him like an infant and giving him a food allowance per week, can you think of any good ideas for foods you can eat on the go besides sandwiches? He apparently thinks cold meat is the devil, but I am livid. We go through this cycle, we get the food spending down..then it creeps back up!
He gets up at 11:30am leaves by 11:45am (does not like to eat right when he wakes up) and works 1pm-1am (sometimes 2 or 3am) then an hour drive to come home and sleep. The foods have to be something he can eat safely while driving.
Re: Meal Ideas for DH
I work in insurance and attended a seminar last week regarding obesity and the workplace. We all agreed that truck drivers have the hardest time because they have to be safe at all times, and it's hard to find options (not saying your husband has a weight problem, it's just something that was discussed)
My ex used to work on a loading dock and had the same issues, and he wasn't even moving from place to place. We got him a wide mouth thermos and made hot meaty soups or put other things in there like sloppy joe meat, that he could spoon onto rolls, or taco meat that he could use to assemble tacos at breaks/stops. Hot items stay hot for several hours in a thermos.
While your husband may not like cold meats, a wrap with bacon bits, turkey meat, lettuce and tomatoes, and a spicy mayo is basically a club sandwich in an easily holdable sandwich. Keeping food from being bland is important if it's not hot.
Planning meals for the road is tough and takes a lot of innovation. Any hot food can be put in a thermos and stay warm, just think outside the box. The items need to be made ahead of time and warmed before being put in the thermos. I'd also ask him what it is that he eats while on the road and figure out a way to make that into something he can put into the thermos.
FYI: I'm mentioning a wide mouth thermos, but there actually may be things out there more innovative, I simply haven't had to worry about it.
Good luck.
There are 12v accessories that he could run off the cigarette lighter while he drives. There's crock pots, a lunch box oven, or keep him supplied in foods that don't have to be kept cold or be heated.( beef jerky, granola bars, dried fruit, etc.)
There is nothing wrong with with agreeing to a set amount budgeted for his food for work. My husband is OTR and gets half that amount for food, cigs and necessities. He's out for a month at a time.
