Already painted canvas...

I tried doing a handmade wall quote a few months back...put stickers on a canvas and painted over them then attempted to peel them off in hopes of a quote being in white. Fail. So now I have a dark grey painted canvas with white specks of what were supposed to be letters on it. Anyway I could "refurbish" the canvas and still use it?

Re: Already painted canvas...

  • If it is a canvas that's wrapped around a wooden frame, you could turn it around and make a shadowbox sort of thing (kind of like this depending on how big your canvas is: http://www.ducklingsinarow.com/2012/04/key-to-my-heart-lovely-old-inn-in.html)

Again, if it is a wooden frame, you could use some sort of metal screen or wire to make a wall planter like this: http://www.bhg.com/gardening/container/plans-ideas/make-a-living-succulent-picture/#page=12

You could paint molding or trim to make it a prettier frame (more like a picture frame) on the backside for either idea.  I hope this is making sense and best of luck!

  • You can re-paint canvases.  I'd give it another shot.

Paint it white and start over.

This. What color had you painted it? Was it put on thick? I would try to paint over it.

  • Canvases tend to be pretty tough. Paint white and start over (though let it dry... really really dry for a while). And if not, that shadow box idea is also pretty awesome!

  • Just buy some gesso (a white paint mixture consisting of a binder mixed with chalk, gypsum, pigment, or any combination of these) and paint over what you painted.  The gesso keeps the previous paint from bleeding through what ever you paint on top of it, keeping all colors true.  You can buy it at any arts & craft store, and it is relatively inexpensive.

Painting the canvas with gesso is a great idea, as another commenter said.  If your bottom layer of paint is really lumpy, you can actually sand it down a little first.

The only worry when painting over a used canvas is knowing what the original paint is.  Acrylic paint does not work well over oil paint.  It will crack, and not stick to the canvas.   Since you painted the canvas yourself, you don't have to worry about this, so adding more paint shouldn't be a problem.  Craft paint is generally acrylic.
