Nighttime?

My sweet little boy used to go down and sleep for 12 hours from about 9 to 9. Now suddenly he's going down at 8 waking between 12-2:30 to nurse and then getting up for the day at 5:30am. He's exhausted and I'm exhausted.

So I'm curious- what time does your baby go to bed/ wake up in the morning? STTN or still having middle of the night feedings?

Doesn't really apply to me since my DD is 2, but maybe he is just going through a growth spurt or teething?  I know when DD was teething she would wake more during the night for a week or two at a time and then return to the good sleeper she was.

  • I'd also think it's teething. Lily was a great sleeper until she cut her first tooth. We went through 2 or so weeks of her having a really hard time falling asleep, and then waking randomly screaming in pain in the MOTN. She seems to be settling back into her STTN habit now (knock on wood).
  • If he's normally a good sleeper I would guess teething, growth spurt, or wonder week.

M goes to bed at 7:30 and wakes up between 6:30 and 7:30. She didn't start sleeping that well until we sleep trained 2 months ago. She was still waking up at least once overnight before that.

He cut his first two teeth through almost a month ago- I don't *think* he's teething but really who am I kidding. Babies "motives" must be the most difficult things to figure out! I'm still wondering if its still the moving him into his own room. I did it 20 days ago- I thought he'd sleep better (he had started waking in the middle of the night to eat- which he hadn't been doing) but I feel like he's sleeping worse then ever now. I'm half tempted to move him back to our room- but I think that might be counter productive.

My vote is growth spurt. How are his naps during the day? He sounds like a great sleeper actually. My daughter has barely been sleeping completely through the night. At his age she'd wake at least 2 times a night to nurse but she slept about 11 hours just not straight through.

He naps every 2-2.5 hours- it varies day to day for how long. Some days he'll sleep amazing and go down for an hour and twenty some days its barely 30 minutes. It used to be that he would only wake in the early morning hours for a feeding like 5:30-6:30am now he's up between 12:30- 2:30am for a feeding and 5:30 for a feeding. During the day he's still nursing every 3-3.5 hours and eating 1 full meal and a couple snacks. I just added a second meal too.

Oh yeah, I'm definitely thinking a spurt. Hopefully the spurt will be done soon and you can get more rest. Sleep with these kids is always ebb and flow.

  • I vote temprary issue-- growth spurt, teething etc.

I wouldn't move him back to your room.  Just give it a few days and hopefully it will resolve soon!

  • J has never STTN, except for maybe a handful of times. he gets up 1-2x/night. the pedi did not recommend CIO at this point. she felt that even if it's just a psychological need to eat during the night that it's still a need to fulfill for him. he gets up somewhere between 7-9am.
