Maple Syrup- wasn't there a post?

I thought I remembered reading a post about this...

Today I was at Giant Eagle and I saw the Log Cabin clearly marked that it had no HFC.

Typically I buy Giant Eagle because I read lables before and it actually contains Maple Syrup.

So I decided to compare.

Both are 24oz.

Log Cabin 2.99

NO HFC  But 1st ing. was Corn syrup followed by "Liquid Sugar" followed by a bunch of crap.

Giant Eagle 2/3

Yes HFC was listed first followed by Corn Syrup. Followed By MAPLE SYRUP then it says less than 2% of a couple things and some color.

Next I looked at nutrition.  All about the same- not really good for ya, BUT the sodium on the Log Cabin was 153mg or something outragous and the Giant Eagle is only 25 mg!!!

Soooo I don't know. Pick you battles I guess.

I opted for a little HFC with some REAL MAPLE and like 1/6th the sodium.....

We don't eat syrup all that much...and I did switch to Simply ketchup with no HFC which Adam especially eats much more of than he does syrup!

ETA:  who they heck actually eats a 1/4 cup of the stuff anyway?? really? we drizzle not eat it with a spoon- yuck!

Re: Maple Syrup- wasn't there a post?

  • corn syrup and HFCS are chemically different.  I believe it is that corn syrup is just sugar from corn- and essentially all that Kayro syrup is. But HFCS is processed additionally in order to make it contain more fructose and less sucrose.

And yes, I was also surprised at the syrup serving size. I have been tracking calories since mid-January and always wonder about that in particular. it would make your pancakes all soggy!

  • If it's true maple syrup I have to limit myself or I would eat it with a spoon.  My dad taps trees and makes his own maple syrup every spring.  He's spoiled my taste buds, because if I don't have his syrup I opt for no syrup and go for berries and whipped cream :-)

  • yea, the real stuff is so good Amy!  But I have this odd affinity for some fake syrup on my pancakes. I cannot explain it. One of those comfort food things I suspect. But we keep both types in the house.  Wink
