Joint credit card?

Do you have any? Should we? We've kept our credit cards as-is since getting married, but I keep wondering if there's any reason for us to get a joint card. We're both at a point where we could safely apply for new credit without hurting our credit. What does MM think?

Re: Joint credit card?

  • We have a joint account and have not had issues.  Communication is, of course, very important, so you have to keep each other informed on what you have put on it.  We always pay the balance off every month.

  • We have joint everything- CC, checking, savings, we didn't keep anything separate. We agree upon our budget each month so there is no reason to try and hide anything from each other (not saying that that's what happens when people keep separate credit cards). For us it was more about convenience- only having 1 bill to pay each month and being able to keep track of the budget together. (Seeing how much we spent for gas that month for instance can be done very easy on Discover- but is kind of a pain in the butt if you have to find and add together all expenses from different accounts.

  • Oh, and we didn't apply for a new card. We kept his discover card as that was the longest open account. He got me added on as a user and got me a card, and then we canceled the others that I had.

  • I put my husband as an authorized user on one of my cards because he didn't have any credit history. He started getting offers in the mail after maybe two months, and he just got approved for two cards of his own in the last week, plus a store card. I have also gotten another new card in the last week and will likely put him as an authorized user on that one as well. We are trying to get both our scores up as high as we can before we take out a mortgage, so that's really the only reason I added him, but it came in handy once when his debit card number was stolen and his account got drained. He didn't find out till he tried to pay for a soda at the drug store and his card was declined. So at least he had a way to pay for things while he waited for it to get resolved and to get his new card.

I don't know if there would be any benefit to having a joint credit card though.

This is what I'm wondering about. We each have a few cards, and we each use one of ours primarily and pay them off in full each month. We don't want to close any, I'm just wondering if we should try to open another, joint card, or try to add one of us as a joint owner (not authorized user - I don't really see the point) on one of the other's accounts. One thing I've been thinking of doing is picking a rewards card to use instead of our checking account, then pay off each month from checking. That way we would earn a lot more rewards - and a little more interest by waiting to pay things off, too!

  • Yup, we only use one credit card that we are both on. We put away all of our other cards so that we don't use them, because we just paid off a lot of his ccard debt. We also have joint checking and saving- since I'm the only doing all the finances for the most part, this was the easiest for me!

  • I have one joint CC with my husband - he had to file for bankruptcy last year due to cr@p that happened at work, so all his credit cards were closed at that time. I added him as a signer for our grocery store credit card (we get discounts on groceries AND gas with it), but that's it. Most of our financial stuff is separate because of what happened - I want to make sure my credit remains pristine.
