Am I crazy?

I posted a few weeks ago about our dog being "off".  We brought her to the vet & the vet diagnosed her with Pancreatitis (gave her some antibiotics & bland diet).  Although she seems better since then, she still seems off.  I told my husband this last night, and he told me I'm crazy.

She has been eating all of her food, but just over all seems lethargic still.  For example, I brought her on our weekly 3 mile run.  Although she has always required a few stops to cool off in the shade & get water, she still will run it, where as yesterday (and the last 3 months) we've had to walk most of it.  She just seems super over heated & worn out - is it to hot (we went at 8am yesterday & it was 61 out...but not a cloud in the sky)?  She then kind of moped the rest of the day & had to be in the same room I was in.  I also did catch her eating grass when we were outside playing, but no vomiting.  Are these reasons to be alarmed?  She's 4.5 year old boxer/American bulldog mix - is she just slowing down?  Can't handle the sun/heat anymore?

Re: Am I crazy?

  • my brother has a 4-5 year old American bulldog.  Last year he wound up with pancreatitis as well and they almost lost him. They have no idea how he contracted it. He had to have 2 blood transfusions and spent about a week in the hospital.  Unfortunately since this incident he has not been the same dog, less playful, more lazy, more grumpy/old man like. I would describe it as a slow down as well. He also has alot of anxiety now when my brother and SIL leave him home or at my parents house (if babysitting is necessary).

I'm sorry i don't have something more uplifting to say.  But i do hope she is going to be ok. Maybe she is still taking time to recuperate.

  • I agree with chrisnjay that she might just be taking a bit of time to fully recover. Let her take it easy for a while longer. Pancreatitis is a big deal, and while a couple of weeks can feel like a long time, it could certainly take your dog that long/longer to fully recover and enjoy the things she used to.

I hope she's back to more of her old self soon.

  • This is going to sound totally ignorant, but it never occurred to me she's still recovering.  Worst dog mom ever.

The vet made it sound like after a week of antibiotics & bland diet she should be good to go.  If not, bring her in for some blood tests.

I called earlier this AM, and they said to bring her in again, she might need a longer dose of antibiotics.

DH thinks we should giver few more weeks & just do short walks & not more strenuous runs.

it def doesn't hurt to have her checked out again because maybe she does need another round of meds but i do agree with your DH, slowly work her back into your walk/run routine.

you are not the worst dog mom! the fact that you are so concerned about her proves it ;)

Being that she is part boxer, have you ever had her heart checked? Boxers are known for congenital heart problems so it might be something to keep in mind and to mention to the vet if she's still acting punky. I hope she feels better soon!!!
