Charleston, SC vacation rentals

hello,
I'm trying to plan a family friendly vacation in Charleston, SC. I"ve looked at all my options and I think a vacation rental is the way to go. I've never used a vacation rental site. I've visited VRBO and home away but am still really nervous.
Have any of you lady's successfully done vacation rentals in the Charleston area? If so, can you share with me your recommendations? I know I would prefer ocean view or ocean front.

We used VRBO and the photos of our particular rental were a bit deceiving. They staged it well and when we got there, all the gorgeous pieces had been replaced with yard sale junk. It also smelled very damp and moldy and they had ant traps and plug-in air fresheners in every available outlet. Never mind the 3 foot and 4 foot long snakes that lived under the back deck that rendered the back yard, grill, and pool unusable to us. :-(
I'm definitely not saying all VRBO properties are like that, but we didn't have a very good experience with ours.
