XP: Recs for Tulum and/or Campeche Mexico?

One of my friends is getting married in Cancun in February so we'd like to make a vacation out of it & were thinking of going to both Tulum & Campeche. Does anyone have any recommendations on where to stay in either area or things to do? Or any other areas around Cancun that we should check out? We are looking for something non AI/resort since we'll be staying at one for the wedding in Cancun. Any good places to eat and/or things to check out? Thanks so much!

  • dh and i are there every year and have been up and down the coast. it's a huge area and your questions are VERY broad.

where are you staying for the weddign in cancun? and why not just stay there after and explore the area? how long will you be there in total? budget?

Friday, December 28 2012. The day I had emergency appendix surgery in Mexico and quit smoking. Proof that everything has a good side!! DH and I are happily child-free!! No due date or toddler tickers here!! my read shelf:

  • In Tulum, we stayed at Cabanas Tulum, nice simple place right on the beach, with an onsite restaurant. They were building a new section while we were there last time, it's called The Beach Tulum, not sure what is the difference between the two. We have also stayed at their sister hotel in Playa del Carmen, La Tortuga. Tulum is pretty quiet, not a whole lot of night life. You are close to the ruins, and Sian Kaan. There are a lot of beachside hotels in the Hotel Zone of Tulum (which is on the way to Sian Kaan and where this particular hotel is located)

We are pretty much open to anything so I didn't get specific. We are staying at Dreams Cancun for 3 days & thinking of maybe doing the other 2 places for 3 days each as well. Budget would probably be around $5000 not factoring in staying at Dreams & airfare. Thank you.
