how to word this - nursing corner

We suddenly have a lot of small babies in our church, and I noticed one momma nursing in the bathroom, and our secretary noticed one going out to her car.  So, we created a nursing corner in our nursery.  It's just a rocking chair with a curtain (like at the Science Center) but I am pretty proud of it! Go us, helping Mommas to feel more comfortable in church!

But now, here's my dilemma.  We want to put an announcement in the bulletin so people know its there.  But I don't want people to think that we don't want small infants in worship.  (One mom a few months back nursed right in the service...which was fine by me.  She was covered and all of that.  People probably didn't even realize it.)  Would you think we were subtly telling you to get out with your infant if you read this in your church bulletin? Any changes you would make?  We truly do love having children in church.  Even the noisy variety.  We just talk louder.  :-)

For infants and parents who may need a little bit of privacy, our nursery now has a curtained off corner.  This area can be used for nursing or for calming down your child should the need arise.  Any of our ushers or nursery workers will be glad to show you where it is.  We love having so many small babies in church, and hope that this area will help to better serve their needs.

Re: how to word this - nursing corner

  • I would change the word need to "would prefer a little bit of privacy" making it more of a option rather than implying if you need to nurse go here kind of thing.

  • I agree with Amanda.  I would also change "curtained off corner" to "nursing nook" , just because I think it sounds cute.

Thanks ladies!  I like that much better.  I was at a total block in coming up with new words.  I HATE when that happens!

And our office manager keeps refering to it as "The Pumping Station."  I told him that was a WHOLE different set up.  Wink  I like nursing nook!  If I think about it I'll take a picture and post it.

    Thanks again!

  • good for you!!

I think "calming down your child" sounds a little off-putting.  Perhaps "soothing" would be better?

Also, I really wish my church would do something like this!  Ours has one folding chair in the back where you have to fight to sit with the ushers, other moms, kids waiting in line to pee, and overflow crowd!  It's awful!  No cry room, nursery, or private area at all!  We actually rarely go to church anymore because of this reason.  Sad

  • I like soothing better too.

Thumbs up to you!  I wish my Church had something like this when my kids were babies.  I could never manage to breastfeed in public.  It would have been great to have that option at church.
