Booking a beach excursion in Jamaica - suggestions?

We are doing a budget vacation in November to MoBay, JAM. We're staying at the Sunset Beach Resort, Spa & Waterpark. This resort gets mixed reviews, but it looks like a good place for a few nights with 3 young kids (as much as we would have LOVED Beaches, we just couldn't swing the cost this year).

I keep reading that the beach isn't the white sand I was hoping for, so I was thinking of taking a day to go to a really nice beach. We live in Jersey so we're used to sub-par beaches, it won't ruin the vacation.

#1 has anyone ever left their resort to spend the day at another?

#2 do you have any suggestions? I'd like to stay close to MoBay because my kids are young (7,4,2) and wont want to sit in a cab/van too long.

It's been years since I was in Jamaica & I understand the roads have improved since then.  We left a resort in MoBay to go to Negril.  It was a long drive.  We went to the place with the cliff divers . . . not someplace I would take kids the age of your children.

I think you'll be OK at the resort.  Since this is a budget vacation, I'd wait to book an excursion until you got there.  There's usually a desk in the lobby.  Check out places like TripAdvisor before you leave home to see what's available & the costs but if where you are is fine, why spend the money unnecessarily?

  • Many of my co-workers take there kids to that resort each year and I've heard they have a blast! That they really cater to the children, etc. The best beach by far in Jamaica is the 7 mile in Negril. You could make the trek there but it will be about 45 mins on the bus. There is also a beach down from the hip strip but it is a lot of locals, which is great but maybe not somewhere to venture with 3 children.

  • My husband and I (no kids) went to Negril in December and stayed at the Sunset at the Palms Resort. Kids are welcome there but they do not have anything special for kids (activities and such) but it was a very friendly and laid back resort. Not big and crouded and you stay in your own hut instead of one huge building. All of the employees were very kind and helpful and made you feel at home, like one big family. The beaches in that area are georgeous. I heard from other travelers that the beaches by MoBay have little sand once you get in the water, the reefe starts right away, Great for seeing marine life but not as good for the feet. The beaches in/by Negril were all white sand for quite a ways out. At the resort we stayed at the swimming area was also roped off to keep out the boats and jetskiers. If you already have your rooms booked, I would reccomend making a trip to Negril (may have to ask about public beaches though) to the beaches. It is about 1-1 1/2 hour drive but well worth it if you can get keep your kids occupied, If you dont have a room booked, I would highly reccomend the Sunset at the Palms resort or somewhere else in Negril. If we ever go back we are definately staying there again.
