Betas came in!!

Betas came in at 36,000 (yes, you read that right)!! At least we know we have a strong viable LO. I don't understand why it is so high though. She said I'm probably around 7 weeks and you can start to hear a heartbeat at 6,000. Any idea what would make it so high?

I was curious if the amount of folic acid I take would have an effect on my numbers. I'm currently taking 4mgs.

I am going back to get retested tomorrow. What type of numbers would I be looking for in the new test? They are also testing blood type tomorrow. Both my husband and I are O negative. Can I turn this down? She said as long as they had a Red Cross card stating his blood type on file, we should be okay.

It is such a relief to know baby is okay... :)

Honestly, that was my first thought. I'm taking a ridiculous amount of folic acid which can sometimes cause twins.

lurker here- if you and your husband are both O- then you don't run the risks a normal pregnant women who is O- does and Reglan injections aren't required. My husband and I are both O- and my doctor required written proof of his blood type (blood donor card worked) in order to avoid the Reglan.

My OB also said we were the first couple he's ever had that were both O-. So you see it's so uncommon, hence requiring proof to make sure your husband isn't remembering wrong!

Congrats on the betas! My understanding is that high betas can indicate multiples but not always- some women just have super high betas for now reason.

  • Twins would be awesome. Then we would be one and done :) I also would laugh cause I stressed to him a long time ago that twins were a possibility. This was our first month off birth control, too. Given my insane medical background, this is more than a miracle.

  • Extra folic acid does not cause multiples, but if you are pregnant with multiples, it is important to take extra folic acid.

    Congrats!

  • Ultrasound is Tuesday. My neurologist is the one that told me that high doses of folic acid can cause multiples. I see from the links that at 7 weeks you can range anywhere from 7,500 to 229k.

Oh yeah - I forgot - there are twins on my mom's side :)

I think you mean Rhogam shots, not Reglan.  I'm O- and when I tested negative they didn't even bother to test my husband and gave me the shot anyways (we knew my H was Rh+ anyways so I would've needed them regardless), but they say a lot of doctors will do this because they can't be 100% sure who the father is.  Yes a little ridiculous and if my H was Rh- as well then I may have declined the shot, but just letting you know it sometimes depends on the doc.

And congrats on the great number!

  • yeah, reglan isn't what you mean. that's something they try to give me for my migraines (i hate it and won't take it now).

many take extra folic acid shouldn't increase your chance of multiples. so much of what we eat has folic acid as is, so taking any on top of that would already put us all at risk. however, it is more important for you to note that twins are common on your mom's side. THAT would more likely be the reason, not the folic acid.

    congrats on the beta's.

My DH knew his blood type but couldn't find his Red Cross card. They had to know for sure because I am negative and if he was positive, I would have needed the Rhogam shot at 28 weeks. So they did typing just to make sure.

I am assuming this time they won't type him and I will get the shot at 28 weeks.
