8 days in Ireland DUB - SNN... by train?

Hi all,

DH  and I are spontaneously going to Ireland for the first time this June. We are not experienced drivers, and though we understand that much of the Irish countryside can be seen only/mostly by car, we'd like to look at some train/bus itineraries before committing to driving on the "wrong" side of the road :p Have you done this? As of now, we have a hotel booked for the first two nights in Dublin, and for the last 2 nights, in Limerick.

Right now, I am thinking:

Day 1 and 2, Dublin itself

Day 3, a day trip from Dublin: Wicklow tour? Belfast/Giant's Causeway?

Day 4, a day trip to Kilkenny or Waterford?

Day 5, train to Killarney

Day 6, Killarney plus some tour?

Day 7, train or bus to Limerick

Day 8, Limerick plus a tour to Cliffs of Moher and Burren?

Day 9, departure from SNN

All suggestions much appreciated - and yes, I am asking this on Tripadvisor, too :D

Re: 8 days in Ireland DUB - SNN... by train?

  • I wouldn't like this because I wouldn't want to be bound by the transportation schedules and having to coordinate all of that. Way too much hassle for me. We did a similar itinerary and rented a car on the way out of Dublin and it was much easier to drive on the opposite side of the road than we would have imagined. We were on our own schedule, could stop when we wanted, etc. We spent our first 2 days in Dublin. Drive to Kilkenny - stopped at Glendalough and Powerscourt on the way. Drive to Kinsale - Rock of Cashel on the way Drive to Killarney - Killarney Natl Park, drove Dingle Peninsula (awesome) Drive to Shannon for final 2 days. Visit Cliffs of Moher, Bunraty Castle. Fly home from Shannon.
  • We drove when we went, and it was amazing.  The first day or 2 was confusing, but after that, we were glad we chose to rent a car.

That being said, whatever you decide, definitely considering trying to stay a night in Galway.  It was my favorite city in Ireland!   If we go back, we'd probably skip Dublin, and go straight to Galway.

  • Definitely do the Cliffs of Moher. This was my husband's and my favorite place by far. Don't waste your time going to Waterford. They don't actually make the crystal there anymore. As for the driving, it's so much more convenient to be able to travel at your leisure. It takes a little getting used to, but definitely do-able!
