To the TTC ladies

What the heck is a pre-pregnancy check-up and what exactly gets checked? Who has had one and who has skipped it?

I was going to call my GYN today to schedule an appointment but I wasn't really sure what to ask for...

Re: To the TTC ladies

  • I had an annual appt just before the wedding, and I mentioned we'd like to try.  She just said I should get on a prenatal, and not to worry if it didn't happen right away.

That was about the extent of that.

I know others have had more extensive appts, though.  Not sure if my experience is typical?

  • When I talked to my doctor re BC (way back when) I asked her the hypothetical....if I want to stop and TTC what steps need to be taken....she said as long as I am taking a multi-vit with iron and folic acid it in, that unless other health stuff comes up and I am taking care of my body (being healthy, taking my meds etc), that I can just stop BC and then come see the doc if a home test reads positive and that prenatal vits are not really necessary  until I am pregnant as long as I am watching my iron and stay on my multi vit....but that I can start taking them if I want when TTC.

She's known me since I was born though, so shes well aware of any health issues I have had, maybe it would be different for someone whose got a different background.

  • They review your medical history, H's medical history, go over any meds that you are taking that could be harmful. They also go over your reproductive history- age of first menses, irregular periods, abnormal pap's etc. They try to identify any potential problems.  And most likely start you on a prenatal vitamin if you aren't already taking one.  You just call and tell them you are going to try to start TTC and would like a preconception consultation.

This exactly and they also did an exam like a yearly. If you have had any issues currently or in the past they may give you a "timeline" before coming back to get checked again but it depends on you and your H's history.

I'm my opinion, a pre pregnancy appointment is not worth it.

If you're due for a pap/gyno appointment then go and ask whatever questions you have then. But it's not worth another appointment just to ask some general ttc questions. It's unlikely that they will do any testing unless you have some sort of medical condition.

Unless you have some known issues with your body...pcos, wonky cycles etc... that might require some additional attention, it's better to just try and see what happens. If it takes longer than a year to get pregnant, then an appointment is probably necessary to see what's going on.

  • When I saw my doc to get my iud out, she asked  f I had any questions, said I should take a multi vitamin/prenatal and that was that. I agree with Christine, unless you have any specific issues/questions I'd just start takin a vitamin and see your doc for your next yearly checkup and mention it then. Especially if you've been healthy this far

I agree..  Except for extenuating circumstances, they're pretty pointless and a waste of time/money, IMO.

I brought it up at my annual pap because I knew I would be trying within the year, and my doc said pretty much the same thing as everyone else.  Turns out I got pregnant right before I was due for my next pap, so that was convenient.  lol

  • They just scheduled me for a routine pap and said I can ask all the questions and go over everything with the doctor.
