Hello Everyone! I created my own itinerary for a fantastic vacation along Lake Michigan last year. It was amazing and affordable, so I thought I would share with everyone here.
The trip included me, my husband, and my eleven-year-old daughter, so it is very family-friendly.
First, the family stopped by Holland, Michigan. The town has a lot of history including a Dutch theme park and the only authentic windmill in the United States. Best to go during the Tulip Festival, but it is fun any time of year.
Next stop was Ludington, Michigan. My family is originally from Ludington, and it is no wonder why my mom loved the town so much. The entire coast is rolling, white sands, public beaches. It's beautiful and cannot be missed. My husband is from the east coast and says the beaches in Ludington are, "just like the beaches on the ocean except clean and without rude people."
We headed to Traverse City next to visit my grandparents. We stopped by the Great Bear Dunes, some lighthouses, and strolled around downtown. A very cool city!
Our last stop was the upper peninsula. The bridge was something I had wanted to see since I was a child. We stayed in a small town in a small hotel, and we took the ferry over to Mackinaw Island in the morning. The island does not allow cars, and it is amazing! We took some bikes around the island and still did not get to see everything we wanted to see. Bikes and horses are allowed on the island for transportation, but it is just as fun to walk.
I hope someone finds this post helpful and considers a tour along Lake Michigan! There are tons of other towns and attractions to see too - this was just a five-day romp.
Happy Vacationing!!!
Re: Lake Michigan Tour
As a Michiganian (Michigander?) I appreciate that you shared your advice. It is a great state and one I have always been proud to call home. We have driven the "circle lake tour" down the east coast of the state when we were returning home from a vacation that went back down from the UP, down what is better known as the "thumb" area. Also a lovely coast.
I agree!
