Advice on cat and splashing water

talandreetalandree member
First Anniversary

My cat loves water, to the point where she just sits there and paws/splashes it from her bowl and it ends up all over our floor, which in turn is starting to ruin our tiles a bit. Also when her food is near, she gets that all wet and it turns nasty and mushy.

Does anyone have any advice on what we could do to prevent this or any product out there that we can use to deter her from doing it? I usually just shoo her away, but obviously that doesn't work.

Re: Advice on cat and splashing water

  • What about a cat fountain? It might create the fresh water movement that she likes, without deterring her from drinking. You really don't want to be shooing your cat away from her water dish, because it might deter her from using it, and that could lead to serious health problems.

Another simple idea would be to put it on a plastic mat or a boot tray even to catch the water?

Our cat is a messy drinker, and loves his cat fountain, but we don't want to deter him from drinking. We just put it on a plastic mat, and found a cat fountain that doesn't create as much splash.

  • My cat did this... we taped her bowls down after we realized the "splashing" was just a side effect of her trying to move her water dish around... Try securing her bowl to the floor or getting a nice, heavy one that she won't be able to move.

  • I second the cat fountain. Our cat loves his, and it has been great for encouraging him to drink more (which is good for cats' kidney and bladder health).

They also make some little plastic mats you can put beneath the fountain or dish to protect your tiles, or you could use a small door mat or mini rug.

  • We had to start putting the water dish on a mat, because one of our kitties likes to play in the water and pull the water dish around (getting a heavier bowl helped stop that). I'd just get a good plastic mat to keep the dish on, so any splashing she does gets caught on the mat and not all over your floor.

  • Thanks for the advice - I'll go look for a new bowl heavier bowl first and possibly a fountain if the bowl doesn't work.

    Ya, she's a silly one :)
