Diaper Purchases...this surprised me...

So the thread mentioning Amazon Prime/Mom Membership got me thinking about where I buy my diapers...

I did some online digging and here are the three options for my diaper purchases. This only pertains to Size 1 Huggies (as a sidenote I found it interesting that no retailer carries the exact same size/quantity box as any other at least of these three options). BTW, my per unit cost is based off what I spend using my discounts.

If I buy at Target - using my Red Card (so I get 5% off the purchase and free shipping)...I spend $44.83, there are 276 diapers in the box for a per unit cost of $0.16.

If I buy at CostCo - using my CostCo Membership American Express (so I get 1% cash back)...I spend $29.69, there are 156 diapers in the box for a per unit cost of $0.19.

If I buy online using Amazon Prime/Mom (I get 20% off and free shipping). I spend $20.21, there are 100 diapers in the box for a per unit cost of $0.20.

The store that saves me the most money is Target, right? More diapers for a lower per unit cost.

This surprised me. I realize this may be altered if I swapped to a generic brand or another diaper size since package quantities usually decrease as you increase diaper size.

Edited to Add: It only pertains to Size 1 Huggies Snug n' Dry.

  • I have heard good things about the Costco brand (Kirkland Signature) diapers.

    Good to know. Thanks!

DD is actually in Size 4 Target Brand diapers now. But, new baby arrives in July and I wanted to start him off in a name brand due to fear of irritating his skin, which is why I priced Huggies Size 1 (generally, I am a fan of generic products, though).

I may look into size 4 generics for DD next! Big Smile

I buy ours at Target when they have the buy 2 get a $20 giftcard promo.. or something similar. DD is in Pampers for now, but we used the Costco Kirkland brand for DS and they are maid by Huggies so they are pretty much the same and a great deal. I don't like buying that many though until DD starts staying in one size for awhile. We went quickly through NB and size 1.

I have literally never heard anything bad about anything that is the Costco brand! We buy their granola, peanut butter, mixed frozen fruit, and a few other things every time I go. We save a ton this way. And we used to be label snobs...

  • Not saying it's for eveyone, but if it's really about the best value I will put my cloth diapers up against disposables any day.

I have spent $400 to diaper my daughter for the entire first year, and will only have to spend about another $150 to make it thru potty training.  Plus I will not have to spend anything for our second child at all. So, two kids from birth to potty training for $550. Bonus, I will probably be able to resell these after we are done using them for conservatively $150-200. So, in actuality will have spent only $350 to diaper 2 kids.

Obviously there are utility costs as well, but these honestly are minimal. I haven't even noticed an increase in my water, electric, or gas bill due to diaper laundry. And the diapers are the easiest laundry I have. Dump in, wash, dry, place in drawer, done.

these don't work if your kid is in daycare, do they? I like the idea of it but I'm not so sure they'd work when at daycare all day!

  • I remember a post long long ago that did a breakdown of diapers with amazon mom and found the same thing, its not cheaper. Maybe the convienance of delivery makes a difference. I think if you used Target brand it would be even less. I hated Target brand diapers, but lots of people have had no problems.

  • It depends on the daycare. I worked at one and there were two children in my class that had cloth diapers. We would have to change them and place the dirty ones in a provided plastic bin with a tight lid. It would be up to the caregiver.
  • If you create a new amazon account and sign up for amazon mom, you get 20% off your diapers if you use subscribe and save option. Use the code BABYDEAL to save an additional $20 off your first purchase! You can get a HUGE box of diapers for around $14.

Many daycare centers do accept them and in-home daycares as well. You may need to give a little instruction on how to use them up front, but it is very simple.

  • Target all the way!  There is also the "Cartwheels" app. which gives 5 MORE percent off!  Also printable coupons on Target.com

  • If you have a CVS near you, I'm beginning to think that they are the best place to buy hands down. This week they have their huggies jumbo pack diapers on sale for 8.99- there are coupons out that can get those down to 6.99 each. When you spend $30 BEFORE coupons, you get a $10 rewards printed back at the register. To get to $30 the easiest, I also bought a pack of wipes (3 refils I believe) for $5.99 (CVS had a $1 coupon that was stackable with a 50 cent huggies coupon). Overall I spent $24, got $10 back so each package of diapers and wipes was like 3.50. This made my diapers about 10 cents a piece.
You can get this deal 2 times this week with your rewards card, you just need 2 computers to be able to print enough coupons!
