Beta #2

Results came back at 49,000 up from 36,000 (48 hours in between). The nurse stressed that it was going up but didn't seem too enthused. Is this a bad number?

Re: Beta #2

  • I don't know much about betas, but I say as long as its going up that's a good sign. That's a big jump from 36,000. Do you have an ultrasound scheduled? I can't remember if you answered this already. :)

  • Ultrasound on Tuesday. I'm afraid that they are thinking that since it didn't double they are thinking something is wrong.

  • Maybe. I don't know that it means something is wrong, but maybe she is just being cautious just in case. I would be concerned if it just barely raised, but yours went up by a lot. Ill keep you and LO in my thoughts though, and I can't wait to see what your ultrasound shows! :)

  • Thanks, girls.

Nurse called and said that she is double checking with the doctor but they might be giving me rhogam now since I had bleeding earlier this week. She said that she is going to call me back today but that the doctor wants to see the ultrasound before making any major assumptions.

    Sigh..

  • Congrats!  Within the first few weeks after fertilization, HCG is expected to double every 48-72 hours.  After that it can take 72-96 hours to double.

  • At some looking the beta's start to plateau. I'm not sure when but given how high they are it's possible that's the case. Rather than multiples you could be pretty far along. It's hard to say so the u/s will be helpful. Hope it works out!

It's normal that a high beta like that won't double. After betas get past a few thousand, an ultrasound is way more reliable for viability than betas.

Also, it's standard that if you have any bleeding and you're RH negative to get RhoGam. I know you mentioned in the other post you might decline since your H is RH negative too, but you may want to get it just in case. This may sound awful or morbid, but you and your doctor can't guarantee that any future pregnancies will be with the same father, and RhoGam protects future pregnancies not this one.

The nurse just called me back and said this which helped me exhale a little. She said that as long as nothing is red, then they aren't really concerned. DH is actually O+, he found his donor card to confirm. So I need the RhoGam farther down the pregnancy.

The nurse said that the doctor decided against giving it to me now and that they are hoping to get a better picture of what's happening. This is going to be the longest weekend of all time.

I feel much better, thanks for being so supportive :)

  • As far as I know it's normal for betas that high to not double. I'm actually surprised they did a second draw. My OB said she won't look at betas above 1500 or so and goes straight to u/s after that.

Take a deep breath, things should be fine!

    Yeah, this.

I'm also RH- and have had the shot (I had to with an amnio last time around).  It's really not as bad as people make it out to be.  It was like any other shot.
