Sand and water tables

This sand and water table is driving me batty!  I'm glad we have it because it keeps the kids busy for a pretty long time but....the sand ends up on the water side, the water ends up on the sand side.  I drain the water and half the sand comes out.    How do you keep your sand and water orderly?  Or do you just let go?

Re: Sand and water tables

  • I always just used water in ours, then we ended up getting a second one as a gift, so no it's sand in one water in the other. There will be some mixing, but not as much as having them combined.
  • I only got a water table, because I had heard about this problem with the sand/water mix.  And having wet sand would bug me.  But, I think that really, you should just let it go.   Dump out the water as best you can, and just accept that they're going to mix.
  • you need to either give up on the sand/water separation or make it only a water table or just a sand table. Sand sticks to wet hands and toys. Even if they are not scooping sand into the water side it will end up there. All that really matters is that they are having fun and being occupied. I try to remind myself of that when I get all twitchy over play-doh mixing.
  • We have one that was a gift from my SIL for G. I only use water in it. I could not figure out how you could keep sand/water from mixing, so we just use both sides for water.
  • I have no idea.  I know its a mess when the boys use the one my mom has.  I think when we move into a house and have a yard I will get them both a water table and sand pit. I know I always looked at the dual tables and just thought "there is no way that will end well."

  • We have a sand box now, so we usually just fill our table with water.  Before we got the sandbox, we just let the sand and water mix.  It would get kind of gross and messy, but given the state of my bathrooms with all boys in the house, stuff like that doesn't phase me too much anymore!
  • Thanks for all the input.  I think I might just fill both sides with sand and get a baby pool for water play.

  • we use it just as a sand table; every once in awhile (when the kids beg and it's really hot outside) i'll fill up the one side with water, but you're right, it's such a pain!
