Maternity clothes question

So, I'm insanely bloated, which is normal - but I look ridiculous. My pants are tight and making me look even more, for lack of a better term, fat than I am. I'm plus size to begin with, but they are literally so tight that my stomach has red marks from my jeans and I can't even handle my tummy control jeans. I put my yoga pants in as soon as I get home, but I can't wear those to work.

I could just buy a a pair or 2 a size up, but that seems kind of ridiculous when I'm just going to get bigger. I'm 7 weeks 4 days. Is it too early to consider a pair of maternity pants/shorts/capris? Also, plus size ladies, do you have any suggestions of stores?

Re: Maternity clothes question

  • I borrowed pants from my mom which were one and two sizes bigger than I normally wear until I got maternity clothes around 16 weeks. The nice thing about it was that I had those pants to shrink down into post part um because my maternity pants didn't fit post part um.

Many other women I know, on here and irl, use the belly band or put a hairband through the button hole on their pants but my pants were low rise so even unzipped I didn't have enough room.

  • No it's not too early.  I got mine around 6 weeks, and had been using a belly band starting at 5 weeks because I was so bloated as couldn't button my pants. There really is no "appropriate week" to buy them, you just get them when you need them, and Id rather you buy maternity pants than bigger sized ones since you'll need them anyways. So do your poor belly a favor and go invest in some. :)

I personally LOVE the ones Kohls carry, but I'm not sure what sizes they have. Have fun shopping! :)

  • I'm having a similar but different problem. I haven't gained any weight at all and my pants if anything are loose except right around my tummy. The problem I am having is that by the end of the day, my tummy is really uncomfortable and I just want to unbutton or take off my pants. They fit, but it is just not comfortable. I don't look pregnant at all, my friends actually say I look like I've lost weight, but my clothes are just so uncomfortable!

Bloat happens. Stretchy pants are a great solution.

  • I walked around with my pants unbuttoned for a good 45 minutes at work today.

  • I started wearing a Bella Band (and hated it) around 7 or 8 weeks this time, and bought my first pair of maternity pants around 9 or 10 weeks I think.  No need to be uncomfortable!  Also, I think I may never stop wearing maternity pants...they are amazeballs.

I went straight to maternity pants as soon as I couldn't button my jeans/slacks. This was around 9 weeks. I say if you are uncomfortable, go for it! Maternity pants rock!

I am plus size as well and I bought all my jeans and dress pants in my pre-pregancy size and have had no problems thus far.

this seems to be the general consensus on all the pregnancy boards I shamelessly lurk on. ;) I say go for it!

Another vote here for switching to maternity pants. I tried the Bella Band, but it cut into me. I wear a 16/18, and I found all of my dress pants from Old Navy. You won't regret it! I may never return to real pants. :)

I switched to mat pants at 12 weeks with DS. I had tried the belly band but it just wasn't cutting it anymore.

It took me a long time to get back into my pp pants, so buying a size up might not be a bad idea.

  • I got my plus sized work pants & jeans from Motherhood.  I was also able to get some skirts & leggings from Old Navy.  ON goes to an xxl, but I found the bottoms to run big.  Shirts & dresses were true to size.

  • I don't think it is too early for maternity pants.

That said, I ended up gaining weight all over with my pregnancy, and ended up having to buy pants 1-2 sizes larger post-baby because the maternity stuff was too big, but my pre-preg stuff was too small.
